Lift Operations Suspended Today At Bear Valley Due To Heavy Snowfall & Potential Avalanche Conditions

Bear Valley, CA...Due to heavy snowfall and High Avalanche Danger, Bear Valley LIFT OPERATIONS WILL BE SUSPENDED today, 2/7/17. We will update conditions this afternoon. Keep an eye out for Mattly’s weather report - at a minimum delays are likely through Thursday. Forecast is calling for a return of cold temps late Thursday. Will keep you posted.

CCWD Greater Valley Springs Area Flushing Update: Week of February 6

Valley Springs, CA...The Calaveras County Water District will be flushing its entire water distribution system in the greater Valley Springs area through the end of March. These operations may impact CCWD customers in Rancho Calaveras, Jenny Lind, La Contenta and Gold Creek. Due to the large size of the system, CCWD crews will be systematically working their way through portions of the service area over a period of about 10 weeks. Flushing will take place on weekdays between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.

Bear Valley, CA...Unfortunately the intense rain, slush and snow has created very unsafe conditions on the slopes and the roads. For the safety of all that might be thinking about traveling to our special part of the Sierra, we encourage you to stay home safe at this time. We WILL NOT OPERATE LIFTS on Wednesday, February 8th. We will evaluate conditions and weather Wednesday afternoon and post our plans for Thursday, February 9th as soon as determined. The village restaurants are open and ready to serve a hot meal if you are in town. Thanks for your patience as we ride out Mother Nature. What a season!!

US Economy Adds 227,000 Nonfarm Jobs In January, Labor Participation Rate At 62.9%

Washington, DC...According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Nonfarm payroll employment rose by 227,000 in January, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.8 percent. Job gains occurred in retail trade, construction, and financial activities. In 2016, job gains averaged 187,000 per month. Incorporating revisions for November and December, which decreased nonfarm payroll employment by 39,000 on net, monthly job gains have averaged 183,000 over the past 3 months.

Copperopolis, CA...In 1895 James A. Tower was only 16 years old when, using barbed wire fencing, he strung the first telephone line for what was to become The Calaveras Telephone Company. As demands for the telephone service increased, the young Mr. Tower found it necessary to establish a central office in the small community of Felix near the town of Copperopolis. Then in 1899, Mr. Tower, now 20 years old, negotiated an agreement with Sunset Telephone Company that would connect his subscribers by telephone with the rest of the world.
