The Employment Situation for August, 2017 156,000 Jobs Created in August

Washington, DC...Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 156,000 in August, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.4 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today. Job gains occurred in manufacturing, construction, professional and technical services, health care, and mining. Household Survey Data. In August, the unemployment rate, at 4.4 percent, and the number of unemployed persons, at 7.1 million, were little changed. After declining earlier in the year, the unemployment rate has been either 4.3 or 4.4 percent since April. (See table A-1.)

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) will be holding its 19th Annual Fall Health Fair on Saturday, September 30th from 7am to noon at the Hospital Campus in San Andreas. “Our purpose is to serve our community in many ways,” said Bob Diehl, Hospital President. “MTMC cares deeply about the health and wellbeing of our community members and beyond. Hosting our annual health fairs is just one way that we are able to provide valuable and needed resources in our rural community.”

Second Quarter GDP Revised From 2.6% to 3%

Washington, DC....Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 3.0 percent in the second quarter of 2017, according to the "second" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the first quarter, real GDP increased 1.2 percent. The GDP estimate released today is based on more complete source data than were available for the "advance" estimate issued last month. In the advance estimate, the increase in real GDP was 2.6 percent. With this second estimate for the second quarter, the general picture of economic growth remains the same; increases in personal consumption expenditures (PCE) and in nonresidential fixed investment were larger than previously estimated.

Stage 3 Theatre Company has no Home! Forced to “go dark” September 1st Looking for New Home for 2018 Season

Sonora, CA...Connie Williams, Stage 3 Theatre Company’s board chair, has announced that the 24-year-old theatre company has exhausted all avenues in locating alternative theatre facilities to complete its 2017 season and must “go dark.” According to Williams, it is not likely that Stage 3 will produce shows until at least mid 2018 to early 2019. “The board has been looking at one building in historic downtown Sonora that might be suitable but renovations will be extensive and will take time and money.”

Dr. Pardeep Athwal is new radiologist at Mark Twain Medical Center

San Andreas, CA...Dr. Pardeep Athwal brings cutting-edge expertise to his new role as radiologist at Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) – but it was old-fashioned family values that brought him to Calaveras County. “I was away from family for way too long,” he notes. Dr. Athwal was born in Modesto and raised in Ceres, where his parents still reside. He has spent the past 15 years pursuing university studies and earning his medical degrees on the East Coast. Dr. Athwal received his Doctor of Medicine at the St. George’s University School of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship at the University Hospital of Brooklyn followed by his Diagnostic Radiology residency at the University of Connecticut Health Center. He recently completed his Musculoskeletal fellowship at the University of Utah Medical Center.

San Andreas, CA...Dear Calaveras, I am publishing this letter after doing much research and inquiry into the pros and cons of the current proposed ban ordinance. This topic is extremely polarizing. On one end of the pole you have the “banners”, people who just don't like it. On the other end you have the growers, legal and illegal, advocating for their right to cultivate. It’s controversial to say you support regulation because then you give the impression that you are a marijuana advocate. The fact is, you can be anti-marijuana and support regulation.
