Copperopolis, CA....In 1895 James A. Tower was only 16 years old when, using barbed wire fencing, he strung the first telephone line for what was to become The Calaveras Telephone Company. As demands for the telephone service increased, the young Mr. Tower found it necessary to establish a central office in the small community of Felix near the town of Copperopolis. Then in 1899, Mr. Tower, now 20 years old, negotiated an agreement with Sunset Telephone Company that would connect his subscribers by telephone with the rest of the world...

Auburn, CA...The Sierra Nevada Conservancy today released its annual report for the recently concluded state fiscal year, providing an overview of what is needed to restore the Sierra to ecological health, and supply abundant clean water to some 23 million Californians. “We hope the report will provide an understanding of just how important the Sierra Nevada is to the rest of California, while highlighting projects and activities that demonstrate and support the need for investment in upper watersheds,” said SNC Executive Officer Jim Branham. “This Annual Report and the recently released Proposition 84 Report -- ‘Investing in California’s Watershed’ -- will complement one another and provide examples of current on-the-ground success stories, as well as work that lies ahead.”

New York, NY....Consumers across the country say they’ll rally behind one of the most important shopping days on the calendar for small businesses – Small Business Saturday. A day created to address one of small business owners’ most pressing needs – more customers. According to the second annual Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, awareness of Small Business Saturday among U.S. consumers shot up to 44% compared to 34% during the same period a year ago. In addition, 77% of those aware of the day say that they plan to “Shop Small” this year. That translates to tens of millions of -consumers across America who say they plan to patronize a small business on November 30th, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The forecasted increase in shopping activity should come as welcome news to retailers facing the shortest holiday shopping since 2002...
