Universal Healthcare Act Clears Senate Committee

Sacramento, CA...Registered nurses and other healthcare advocates are heralding the California Senate Health Committee's passage of SB 562, the Healthy California Act today, Wednesday, April 26, with a majority of the committee members’ support. SB 562, the Healthy California Act, would establish an improved Medicare for all type system in California. Full details of the bill may be viewed here http://bit.ly/2ng5hUg Prior to the hearing, over a thousand bill supporters, including members of the California Nurses Association/National Nurses United, held a spirited rally at the Sacramento Convention Center followed by a colorful march to the State Capitol for the Senate Health Committee hearing.

San Andreas, CA...Susan Wright’s career as an Occupational Therapist spans some 31 years and she says it has never seemed like work. “It’s more like helping out a friend,” she notes. “OT helps people be independent by figuring out ways for them to handle the activities of daily living.” Susan joined the Mark Twain Medical Center team in January as full-time Occupational Therapist. Her office in the Outpatient Services Center at MTMC reflects her training as a hand therapy specialist – but she reaches far beyond her specialty to help people regain their independence.

San Andreas, CA…The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce, California Association for Local Economic Development (CALED) and Central Sierra Economic Development District (CSEDD) celebrated the Grand Opening of the Calaveras Business Resource Center on April 13. The CBRC is a project that was developed by the 2015 Leadership Calaveras Program and as a result of the 2015 Butte Fire in Calaveras County, received funding through an Economic Development Administration (EDA) grant to provide resources and support to the Calaveras County business community.

Tourism to Yosemite National Park Creates $686,339,500 in Economic Benefits

Yosemite, CA...A new National Park Service (NPS) report shows that 5,028,868 visitors to Yosemite National Park in 2016 spent $520,629,100 in communities near the park. That spending supported 7883 jobs in the local area and had a cumulative benefit to the local economy of $686,339,500. “Yosemite National Park welcomes visitors from across the country and around the world,” said Acting Superintendent Chip Jenkins. “We are delighted to share the story of this place and the experiences it provides. We also feature the park as a way to introduce our visitors to this part of the country and all that it offers. National park tourism is a significant driver in the national economy, returning more than $10 for every $1 invested in the National Park Service, and it’s a big factor in our local economy as well. We appreciate the partnership and support of our neighbors and are glad to be able to give back by helping to sustain local communities.”

San Andreas, CA...The Calaveras County Planning Department has released the draft of the Commercial Cannabis Ban Ordinance. Its' intent...."It is the purpose and intent of this chapter to prohibit, to the maximum extent allowed under state law, with limited exceptions, the commercial, medical, and recreational cultivation, manufacture, testing, distribution, transportation, and storage of cannabis in order to preserve the public peace, health, safety, and general welfare of the citizens of Calaveras County and the environment while retaining the ability of patients to have access to medical cannabis in the County to the extent deemed necessary under state law.
