Bear Valley Announces Plans for New High-Speed Six-Pack Chairlift |

Bear Valley, CA...Skyline Bear Valley Resorts has entered into an agreement with Leitner-Poma to construct and install a new high-speed six-pack chairlift to be completed this year in time for the start of the 17/18 ski season in late November. The new lift will transport six passengers at a time from the mid-mountain ski lodge to the top of the mountain, at 8500’ elevation, nearly three times faster than the current lift. This exciting lift replacement project is pending process approval by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service (Stanislaus Forest), and will replace the Bear chairlift increasing guest uphill capacity of the mountain’s main artery.

Murphys, CA...The 11th Annual Taste of Calaveras drew its' largest crowd ever on April 22nd At Ironstone and it Showcased the Finest Wine, Culinary Treats & Art. More than 40 of Calaveras County’s most acclaimed winemakers, restaurateurs and plein air artists converged at Ironstone Vineyards. The event featured wine tasting, gourmet samplings, live music by the Bob Eisenmann Jazz Trio, food and wine demonstrations, local artists painting along with artisans on site and a silent auction featuring Calaveras experiences and Calaveras products. Below are a few photos from the event that most attendees said was the best Taste Of Calaveras Yet.

Windsor, CT...A new consumer survey by Voya Financial's Annuities and Individual Life businesses revealed that many Americans might be willing to risk their financial security to keep some of their most-valued items. In fact, nearly half (45%) of Americans surveyed were willing to give up their financial security if it meant keeping either their smartphones, cars or vacations.

Columbia College Graduates 34 Fire Academy Students |

Columbia, CA...The Columbia College Fire Academy will hold its graduation ceremony and presentation of Certification of Completion to 34 successful students of the Fire Technology Program. The event, which is open to the general public, will be held Thursday, April 27th, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Oak Pavilion at Columbia College. Certificates will be awarded based on the student’s successful completion of the academic and manipulative training as mandated for a California Firefighter 1 Certification. The students must still complete six months of full-time or one year of part-time field experience before applying to the state for Firefighter I Certification. “Some of the graduates will apply or continue with reserve, intern and volunteer positions at local or state-wide fire departments since entering the academy” said Chief Shane Warner, Columbia College Fire Technology Program Coordinator and professor. “Many of the students will continue on to pursue associate degrees in fire technology at Columbia College.” “Some of the students are already applying for seasonal employment with CAL Fire, Forest Service, and local fire agencies said Instructor Andy Van Hoogmoed.

Ebbetts Pass Fire District's ISO Rating May Reduce Your Insurance Rates |

Arnold, CA...The local Ebbetts Pass Fire District has become one of the models for rural districts. The consistently rank higher than many urban districts even for things such as cardiac care. Another way they many be able to help those in their district is on their home insurance rates. The following quote from EPFD Chief Mike Johnson explains it better than we could.. "Home insurance companies can use various tools to determine a rate for calculating coverage fee premium, some companies use a scale based on the ISO Public Protection Class rating. The ISO Public Protection Class rating evaluates the performance of the local fire agencies on many levels and water provisions such as hydrant placement and flows. Evaluations of ISO Public Protection Class ratings usually occur every 10 years or so and are scored on a scale of 10 – 1, 1 being the best. We recently had our evaluation and have been reclassified from Class 4 to Class 2 in our district for all structures are within 1000 feet of a hydrant and 5 miles from a fire station, a criteria most of our district falls under. We believe that all our residents that have insurance companies using the ISO Public Protection Class rating will benefit from sharing this information with their insurance company and may result in a reduced rate."

Yosemite, CA...Big Oak Flat road will reopen to all vehicular traffic at 5:00 am Monday, May 1, 2017. Yosemite National Park is pleased to announce that the Big Oak Flat road will reopen to all vehicular traffic at 5:00 am on Monday, May 1, 2017. Visitors entering the park via Highway 120 West will once again be able to drive via Big Oak Flat road to Yosemite Valley. Road work will still be underway when the road reopens. Visitors planning to drive over Big Oak Flat road should be prepared for one-lane traffic closures with waits up to 15 minutes. The road will be closed from 7:00 pm to 5:00 am for several days as work crews finalize the repairs to the Big Oak Flat road.
