Burlingame, CA...Rising up together to protect public education and send the message that all students deserve safe schools, thousands of California educators, parents, administrators and students will join in a rapidly growing series of social justice events statewide Monday, May 1, as part of the CTA Day of Action. “This is a day of local resistance to threats to dismantle or privatize public education coming from the Trump administration, and for standing up for the right of all students to feel safe and respected at school, regardless of their immigration status,” said Eric Heins, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association. “It’s time to take a stand together for the future of our communities and to demand social justice for all students. Our schools must continue to be community centers, and not become profit centers.”

National Income and Product Accounts Gross Domestic Product: Less Than One Percent First Quarter 2017

Washington, DC...Real gross domestic product (GDP) increased at an annual rate of 0.7 percent in the first quarter of 2017 (table 1), according to the "advance" estimate released by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. In the fourth quarter of 2016, real GDP increased 2.1 percent. The Bureau emphasized that the first-quarter advance estimate released today is based on source data that are incomplete or subject to further revision by the source agency (see “Source Data for the Advance Estimate” on page 2). The "second" estimate for the first quarter, based on more complete data, will be released on May 26, 2017.

Bear Valley Announces Plans for New High-Speed Six-Pack Chairlift

Bear Valley, CA...Skyline Bear Valley Resorts has entered into an agreement with Leitner-Poma to construct and install a new high-speed six-pack chairlift to be completed this year in time for the start of the 17/18 ski season in late November. The new lift will transport six passengers at a time from the mid-mountain ski lodge to the top of the mountain, at 8500’ elevation, nearly three times faster than the current lift. This exciting lift replacement project is pending process approval by the U.S.D.A. Forest Service (Stanislaus Forest), and will replace the Bear chairlift increasing guest uphill capacity of the mountain’s main artery.

Murphys, CA...The 11th Annual Taste of Calaveras drew its' largest crowd ever on April 22nd At Ironstone and it Showcased the Finest Wine, Culinary Treats & Art. More than 40 of Calaveras County’s most acclaimed winemakers, restaurateurs and plein air artists converged at Ironstone Vineyards. The event featured wine tasting, gourmet samplings, live music by the Bob Eisenmann Jazz Trio, food and wine demonstrations, local artists painting along with artisans on site and a silent auction featuring Calaveras experiences and Calaveras products. Columbia College Graduates 34 Fire Academy Students

Columbia, CA...The Columbia College Fire Academy will hold its graduation ceremony and presentation of Certification of Completion to 34 successful students of the Fire Technology Program. The event, which is open to the general public, will be held Thursday, April 27th, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Oak Pavilion at Columbia College. Certificates will be awarded based on the student’s successful completion of the academic and manipulative training as mandated for a California Firefighter 1 Certification. The students must still complete six months of full-time or one year of part-time field experience before applying to the state for Firefighter I Certification. “Some of the graduates will apply or continue with reserve, intern and volunteer positions at local or state-wide fire departments since entering the academy” said Chief Shane Warner, Columbia College Fire Technology Program Coordinator and professor. “Many of the students will continue on to pursue associate degrees in fire technology at Columbia College.” “Some of the students are already applying for seasonal employment with CAL Fire, Forest Service, and local fire agencies said Instructor Andy Van Hoogmoed.
