Get Your Comments In Now On Forest Service Travel Management Plan

Sonora, CA...Today is the final day for comments on Environmental Impact Report on the New Motorized Travel Management plan. This process started about two years ago and the first meetings were well attended and full of interest. The Forest Service must have found the right balance this time around as the recent public meetings have been sparsely attended with few in the audiences either overjoyed or very upset. The plans adds clarification and directions to what in many cases has already been the defacto mode of operations. From the summary "The Stanislaus National Forest proposes to: (1) prohibit motor vehicle travel off designated NFTS roads and motorized trails by the public except as allowed by permit or other authorization (excluding snowmobile use); (2) add 151.64 miles of existing unauthorized routes to the NFTS currently open to the public for motor vehicle use; and, (3) make vehicle class changes to the existing NFTS on 616.80 miles of roads...

San Andreas, CA.... On Sunday, January 10th, the Calaveras Youth Wrestlers participated in the Jim Bennett Classic Wrestling Tournament held at Calaveras High School. Youth wrestling is a popular sport in Calaveras County with athletes ranging in age from 7-14 years. Wrestlers are matched up according to their age and weight. This sport is not only physically demanding requiring both strength and agility, but it is also mentally challenging because of the complex techniques and strategies the athletes must master.....

In fact the winter months are some of the best times to explore the foothill elevations as the temps are perfect and you are above that pesky valley fog. The Calaveras Visitors & Convention Bureau has a nice selection of maps and trail descriptions on it's website and they will be adding more. For expert info and the latest advice on the "Perfect Ride" stop by and talk to Eric Olson and his crew at The Mountain Pedaler in Angels Camp. So dust off the bike or buy a new one and head outside and have some fun...

Have your purchased your 2010 fishing license yet? Don't forget to pick one up before you head out to the lake. There have been a couple of changes this year- the Bay/Delta stamp has been discontinued- you willl no longer need one of those. And after March 1st, 2010, you will not be required to wear your license in plain view while fishing. Remember that you DO need to wear it in plain sight above your waist until March 2, 2010, when the new regulations take affect....

Bear Valley, CA...Bear Valley was front and center in the Ski Racing World in the Central Sierra's this last weekend. Starting on Friday young speed suited athletes from Sierra Summit, Badger Pass, Dodge Ridge and Bear Valley filled the resort. The future Lindsey Vonns and Bode Millers sped their way down Bear Valley's slalom course for two days of racing. Practice courses were set up on Friday so the kids could could get in some "gate time" before the races on Saturday and Sunday...

Bear Valley Race Team To Host Rasmussen Classic Slalom Cup This Weekend ~By John Hamilton...Still Seeking Donations For Silent Auction & Raffle

Bear Valley, CA....The Bear Valley Race Team will play host this weekend to the first race of the Central Series, the Rasmussen Classic Slalom Cup. This Slalom race will be run on the NASTAR run at Bear Valley Mountain Resort. Young speedster's from all over Northern California will converge on the course to see who can carve their way to the top. The hosting Bear Valley Team did very well last year and continued their successful run all the way through the Championships at Mammoth in April of last year. Their Head Coach, John Cashman, was even named the 2009 Far West Coach of the Year. Some of the young racers competing this weekend have Olympic and World Cup dreams. Their focus and preparation is impressive especially when compared to .....
