A Bit of Wisdom from Ty Cobb

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/18/2023 09:46 AM
Arnold, CA...Today is the 352nd day of the year, 13 days remain to get those new years resolutions finished up. Our Bit of Wisdom for today comes from Tyrus Raymond Cobb, December 18, 1886 – July 17, 1961.  The legendary if at times controversial player not only set records that still stand to this day he amassed a fortune from his early investments in Coca Cola and other companies.

"The base paths belonged to me, the runner. The rules gave me the right. I always went into a bag full speed, feet first. I had sharp spikes on my shoes. If the baseman stood where he had no business to be and got hurt, that was his fault."

"The great trouble with baseball today is that most of the players are in the game for the money and that's it, not for the love of it, the excitement of it, the thrill of it."

"I have observed that baseball is not unlike a war, and when you come right down to it, we batters are the heavy artillery."

"I had to fight all my life to survive. They were all against me... but I beat the bastards and left them in the ditch."

"Speed is a great asset; but it's greater when it's combined with quickness - and there's a big difference."

"When I began playing the game, baseball was about as gentlemanly as a kick in the crotch."

I never could stand losing. Second place didn't interest me. I had a fire in my belly.

"Don't come home a failure."

A Bit of Wisdom from J. Paul Getty

Posted by: thepinetree on 12/15/2023 11:20 AM
“In some respects, a society in which the members reach a universal level in which they are anonymous drones by choice is even more frightening than one in which they are forced to be so against their will. When human beings relinquish their individuality and identity of their own volition, they are also relinquishing their claim to being human.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“The conformist is not born. He is made. I believe the brainwashing process begins in the schools and colleges.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“There is, however, hope for any person who wants to remain an individual. He can assert himself and refuse to conform. He'll be on his own, that's true, but while he will not have the security enjoyed by those who do conform, there will be no limits to what he may achieve.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“It shouldn't be very difficult for anyone to resist the temptation to force himself into the pattern of the structured man. One needs only to remember that a groove may be safe--but that, as one wears away at it, the groove becomes first a rut and finally a grave.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“The majority is by no means omniscient just because it is the majority. In fact, I've found that the line which divides majority opinion from mass hysteria is often so fine as to be virtually invisible.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“The beauty one can find in art is one of the pitifully few real and lasting products of human endeavor.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

“If you owe the bank $100, that's your problem. If you owe the bank $100 million, that's the bank's problem.” ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976

"My formula for success is rise early, work late, and strike oil." ~ Jean Paul Getty Sr. December 15, 1892 – June 6, 1976
