Respirit – Week 15 “What Does God Expect in Return?” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 04/18/2012 07:09 AM
Murphys, CA...I have reached a season that brings back a lot of memories. Almost daily I hear myself saying, “Last year on this day I was…” and the sentence is finished with a frightening or sad experience, like being in the hospital or missing out on some event with my son. This week, I find myself vacationing in the same location I enjoyed last fall. It has been extremely emotional and I feel literally overwhelmed by one question....

Respirit – Week 14 “Do I Want to be Free?” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 04/04/2012 10:50 AM
Murphys, CA...Some of you may know I have a weakness for art, which, in my book, includes tattoos. I’ve considered getting a cancer ribbon tattooed somewhere on me, but I’ve hesitated because I’m not sure I should have a constant reminder of this disease. But on the other hand, I never go more than a few minutes without thinking about it anyway. When will I ever be free from this cancer? And do I want to be?...

Respirit – Week 13 “What will you allow Him to do?” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 03/27/2012 10:00 AM
I thought maybe it would be good time to clear up a couple misconceptions about my journey through cancer and its link to my faith. I think perhaps some readers think that I “found God” during the course of my illness. I also feel that people might misunderstand my acceptance of cancer as part of God’s plan for me because I am taking a treatment to which I am responding. Neither statement is accurate and the latter could not be further from the truth…

Respirit – Week 12 “Expect A Miracle!” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 03/19/2012 10:05 PM
Murphys, CA...I was raised on the expression, “Hope for the best, expect the worst.” It certainly seems like pretty solid advice. It allows us to prepare ourselves for any circumstance the natural world can throw at us, while perhaps maintaining an optimistic, hopeful attitude. But it doesn’t allow for our supernatural God. He is not bound by our human expectations. The gospel of Mark tells us that with God all things are possible, so start expecting miracles!...

Respirit – Week 11 “A Promise Fulfilled” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 03/12/2012 03:22 PM
Murphys, CA...I set a goal for myself last year. It was to live free from regret. It was to gladly accept God’s plan for me and to use it for His glory. This goal is a challenge, especially when cancer is part of His plan. But I realized this week that I achieved my goal. Not only that, but He has graced me with true gratitude to have had this disease in my life. I wouldn’t change a thing...

Respirit – Week 10 “Earth: Heaven’s Waiting Room” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 03/04/2012 04:00 PM
Murphys, CA...We are constantly living in anticipation of something. We are part of a society that prides itself on its efficiency. We are frustrated when the fast food drive-thru takes too long or gets our order wrong. We get annoyed at traffic going less than 80 mph or by tourists who obviously are unsure of what lane they should be in. So how can we possibly handle a God that answers prayers in His time, and doesn’t give us exactly what we think we want? ...

Respirit – Week 9 “Forgive me, Lord… I Just Can’t Forgive” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/27/2012 06:09 AM
Murphys, CA...After having a plan for this week’s column, and doing all the research and preparation for it, I have just decided to go completely in a different direction. I really do not know where this new theme is going to lead me, and therefore us. I don’t have any notes or outlines or Scripture highlighted. But the Lord told me several times in the last few days what I was supposed to explore. It is definitely related to healing. So I will attempt to discuss what I believe is one of the most difficult human challenges: forgiveness....

Respirit – Week 8 “Why Does It Have to Hurt?” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/18/2012 11:54 AM
Murphys, CA...In the past year, since my cancer diagnosis and treatment began, I have experienced so much pain. Each encounter brings a separate opportunity to learn. What I’ve found is that the messages of pain are often in complete opposition to one another. That is, no matter how I am able to handle the pain of the moment, it teaches me something different about myself… or my future… or my God...

Respirit – Week 7 “What’s in a name?” ~By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/13/2012 11:33 AM
Murphys, CA...I have always had an interest in names and their meanings. I remember dreaming about what I would name my future children when I was but a child myself. I have come to learn as an adult, that names in the Bible are full of meaning and, often, part of God’s message is within the name itself...

Respirit – Week 6 “Defining Success” By Catherine Lewallen

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/06/2012 06:41 AM
Murphys, CA...I am so excited that cancer has helped me become the person I never realized I could be. Suffering has made me move so much more slowly and deliberately. I have had many opportunities to examine my attitudes and reassess my motivations. I have to come to realize that any success I’ve enjoyed that was not purposefully dedicated to His glory was not a success....
