The Kid Connection..."Summer Safety"~by Stefanie Pechan

Posted by: Kim_Hamilton on 07/15/2010 10:28 AM
We’re in the midst of summer and while most understand the importance of sunscreen and water safety, here are a few refreshers: Apply (and re-apply) sunscreen: Up to 80 percent of kids will get sunburned this summer and just one bad burn may double the risk of melanoma cancer later on in life. To keep your little one sunburn free: Slater on SPF 30 or higher at least every two hours (and ALWAYS after swims). Put it on before your child gets dressed so you don’t miss any spots. Use an ounce of lotion to adequately cover a toddler; two ounces for adults. Avoid sunscreen battles by using a tear free option.....

The Kid Connection..."Extending learning throughout the summer: Keep your children reading!"~by Stefanie Pechan

Posted by: thepinetree on 06/01/2010 10:48 PM
In between trips to the community pool or vacationing, you might consider swinging by your local library or book store with your family. Why? Reading over the summer keeps those brains working! A slew of skills are sharpened and honed for the next school year; fluency, decoding, reading comprehension, vocabulary, the list goes on and on. Another tidbit of research (parents magazine): “A study led at Nevada University concluded that children who come from homes well-stocked with books are likely to stay in school three years longer than those who don’t. The Telegraph says, on the study: ‘Regular access to books has a direct impact on pupils’ results, irrespective of parents’ own education, occupation, and social class, it was claimed.’ Even having 20 books in your home can make a difference.”...

The Kid Connection..."Your kids: Helping around the house! "~by Stefanie Pechan

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/23/2010 11:17 PM
Yes, it’s possible! Getting your kids to help around the house doesn’t have to be a constant battle. A few simple strategies will persuade even the most reluctant child to help out with housework. Younger Children: Children who can walk are old enough to do simple tasks such as putting toys away or placing books in a book basket or on a bookshelf. Stay by your child while they help and show them the correct way to put things away. This will pay off in the long run when you ask them to do this in the future (since they will know how it should be done). They crave success, so instead of giving them an entire room to clean, start with a smaller area. Being specific helps. Instead of saying “clean up your toy area”, you can say “put your trains back on the train table”. ....

This Week on "The Kid Connection"... Handling Homework Hassles ~by Stefanie Pechan

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/09/2010 11:47 PM
Having trouble getting your child to complete their homework? Has it gotten to the point where you dread even hearing the word? Here are some tips and suggestions that might help. First of all, please know that most teachers do understand that there’s life after school has ended for the day. There’s soccer practice, youth group, errands to run, etc. Homework is not just ‘more work to be done at home’, it is designed to: Reinforce the concepts that were taught throughout the day. Teach how to use resources, such as libraries, reference materials, and encyclopedias. Explore subjects more fully than time permits in the classroom....

The Kid Connection...Make Grocery Shopping with the Kids a Fun Experience ~by Stefanie Pechan

Posted by: thepinetree on 04/25/2010 12:09 AM
“Okay, breathe. I can do this”. I gave myself a pep-talk before entering the building. Job interview? Swimsuit shopping? Nope, grocery shopping—with the kids. Such a simple errand can be as coordinated as a precise military operation. Seriously. Before I go, I imagine the layout of the grocery store, know where I have to go for each item, and of course, know how many steps it takes to get to the restroom (I have potty trainers). I also know exactly how much time I have before my kids are “done”. If you see me speed walking through the aisles, you know why.....

The Kid Connection..."Gardening with the kids"~by Stefanie Pechan

With the nice weather out, we thought we would put his popular column up again for your viewing enjoyment! You’ve seen them on television. It’s hard to walk by them at the store without picking up a dozen or so. Yes, it’s that time of year. The home improvement stores are flaunting their bounty of flowers, seeds, and all things garden. I love walking into the outdoor section of these stores just to experience the vivid splashes of color. It is all so inspiring. I find myself imagining my planters bursting with color, yet the old saying “Don’t plant anything until after Frog Jump weekend” causes me to hesitate…but just for a second....
