Kindness Week in Calaveras County, February 11 -17, 2013.

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/10/2013 11:28 PM
Calaveras County, CA...The idea is simple: When we make a conscious effort to perform a kind act, ripples of kindness flow forth. The grassroots effort to promote random acts of kindness firmly took hold in 1995 when the Angels Camp City Council issued a proclamation and The City of Angels became the first designated "Kindness Zone" in the United States. Since then, the ripples of kindness have continued to spread and now wash over all Calaveras County Schools in a celebration of kindness each February. Join us!

Candlelight Service for Alex and Macaila. The Embrace Before Goodbye. ~By John Hamilton.... Update: ThePineTree.net will be Webcasting the Memorial Service

Posted by: John_Hamilton on 02/06/2013 10:16 PM
Angels Camp, CA...(Update...ThePineTree.net will be webcasting Alex and Macaila's Memorial Service starting at 11am on Saturday for those of you who will not be able to attend in person) Tonight the Candlelight Service for Alex and Macaila Marshall was held at Bret Harte on the Quad. Images from happier times were up on the screen as the Bret Harte Community came together to embrace the memories of their now departed friends. The beautiful, vibrant faces on the screen were a reminder of how great and painful a loss this is for the community. They spoke of how close the brother and sister were, their personalities and impact on their friends lives. This week will be filled with memories that will forever be etched on the minds of the students. I was speaking with a Bret Hart Alum today and this week brought back memories for him from the 1980s when students were lost in a car crash. As the years slip away into memories for the young faces that watched their friends on the screen we hope they can take solace in the knowledge that the now fresh wounds will close into scars and as time passes the scar's color will fade but the lines left behind will always remind them of their friends and their losses...

Red Cross Looking for Local Disaster Volunteers. Training to Be Held in Copperopolis

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/05/2013 09:44 AM
Calaveras, CA...The American Red Cross is looking for local disaster volunteers. Having access to trained Disaster Action Team (DAT) local members is critical to the response of area emergency responders during a major disaster in Calaveras or a disaster affecting a single family in the Greater Copperopolis Area. Thanks to many dedicated Calaveras County volunteers, the Red Cross is able to immediately respond to the immediate needs of Calaveras families affected by home fires, floods, wildfires and other disasters throughout the year in the Fire Protection Districts of West Point, San Andreas, Murphys, CalCo (Jenny Lind/Foothill) and Central Calaveras. But the Red Cross needs to increase their volunteer base in Calaveras County so that it can continue to respond immediately to disasters of all sizes in this rural county and help people get back on their feet as soon as possible.

Updates and Additions on Marshall Murder-Suicide. Candlight Vigil on Wednesday at 7pm, Memorial Saturday at 11am.

Posted by: thepinetree on 02/04/2013 08:41 PM
Murphys, CA..On February 2, 2013 Calaveras County Sheriff’s deputies and investigators investigated a double murder-suicide that occurred at a residence on the 1200 block of Sandalwood Drive in the Forest Meadows subdivision, Murphys. The investigation revealed that Phillip Randolph Marshall (54) took the life of his two children before taking his own life with a Glock 9mm semi-automatic handgun. It was further determined that Phillip Marshall’s son and daughter, Alex Marshall (17) and Macaila Marshall (14), were asleep on the couch at the time they were shot. Foul play by outside persons has been ruled out, and evidence at the scene confirmed that Phillip Marshall was the shooter. The time of death is still being examined...

We stopped by Bret Harte today to see how the very sad day went. The remembrances and healing are starting. The library that was being used for counseling had a steady stream of students, memorials were scheduled and the Quad had banners up. One was even from cross county Calaveras High expressing sentiments that we are are one community even if rivals.
