Tuolumne-Calaveras Unit Moves to Open Burning

San Andreas, CA...On Monday, December 9, 2013, at 8:00 AM, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) moved into open burning. Burning will be permitted 24 hours a day on “Permissive Burn Days” as established by the Air Pollution Control District (APCD) in each county. CAL FIRE burn permits will not be required until May 1, 2014 (or earlier if conditions require). Landowners may be held liable if their fire escapes their control. Remain in attendance of your fire, keep a water supply close to the burning site and do not burn when windy, or when high winds are predicted. In Calaveras County, burning on property five acres or more in size requires a permit from the Calaveras APCD. In Tuolumne County clearing two acres or more of vegetation requires a permit from the Tuolumne APCD....

Prevailing southeast winds up to 10 mph shifting to the southwest in the afternoon. Gusts up to 30 mph. Over ridges...prevailing southwest winds 10 to 20 mph increasing to 15 to 30 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: A chance of snow in the evening...then snow after midnight. The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program Celebrates Ten Years of Supporting Friendships and Building Community.

Angels Camp, CA...This month, the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program is celebrating ten years of supporting friendships and building community. Donna Shannon and Tina Miller were the first mentor and mentee matched in the Mentoring Program in 2003, and on December 18th they will celebrate their tenth anniversary as friends. “It has been a joy to witness the beauty and growth in Donna and Tina’s friendship over the years,” said Kathryn Eustis, Director of Youth Development and Prevention Programs at the Calaveras County Office of Education. “We are so grateful that they have continued to participate in and support the program all this time. How many mentoring programs get to showcase their inaugural match at their tenth anniversary?”

Copperopolis, CA...James (Jim) Leone, 65, passed away on November 27, 2013. Jim was born in Oakland, CA., and lived the past 13 years in Copperopolis. He is survived by his wife, Laurie, mother Gladys Leone of Hayward, sister and brother-in-law Pat and Jack Darcey of Newark, CA., brother-in-law Merlin Bart, brother-in-law Ronald (Kathi) Bart, sister-in-law Valerie (Moses) Geller, nieces Wendy (Mark) Ruiz, Cheyenne Manning and Alexandra Geller (Mario) of Studio City; nephew Matt (Madelyn) Bart of Round Rock, Texas and 4 great nephews, Canon, Seth, Ronin and Sebastian; his “adopted” sons, Zack and Brett Anisko of Copperopolis and several aunts and uncles.
