Bret Harte HS Swim Teams Splits Victory With Linden

Angels Camp, CA ... Bret Harte High School Swim Team competed at Linden, CA last Friday. The Boys Team came home victorious, beating Linden 92-78 while the Girls Team made a good showing against the clock but lost the meet 90-80."Bret Harte swam a great meet. It was a very fun and exciting meet to watch and coach," said Coach Lauren Gerber. "The Linden and Bret Harte Girls teams are very evenly stacked and it makes for a great competition, with lots of close and fast races. Swim meets this close are extremely exciting to watch as second and third places make or break the end result of these meets." Coach Gerber continued,"We are very proud of the way our girls fought and a lot of personal records were swam by way of a great contest. The boys swam great as well, as they continue their undefeated season with very good swims and solid relays."

Chelsea Ruthrauff Pursues Future in Medicine

San Andreas, CA ... Miss Calaveras 2013 Chelsea Ruthrauff, a freshman at Sonoma State University majoring in biology, dreams of attending medical school to become a doctor. "I have been interested in medicine since I was in 7th grade, I discovered my passion during my senior year of high school," remembers Chelsea,"I had the chance to enroll in the ROP medical program at Calaveras High School and volunteer on the ambulance throughout the year. I learned a great deal of information about all kinds of patient care and what it is like to work in the medical field. I not only obtained my first aid and CPR certifications, but am now a certified phlebotomist (a person who draws blood). I have great expectations for my future in medicine."

The Friends of the Calaveras Library are sponsoring their 17th annual fun-filled evening of dinner and trivia competition this March 22, 2014, at the San Andreas Town Hall. This year’s theme, “California Dreaming”, will provide plenty of material for the Trivia Contest. The competition for the top prize and bragging rights in the trivia contest is always fierce and full of good-natured jibes...

Bret Harte Hosted Linden this past Friday for their first Mother Lode League Meet. Final Score was Girls BH 82 Linden 88 Boys BH 103 Linden 66

Angels Camp, CA...Bret Harte swam extremely well, and as always Linden had a number of outstanding swimmers that pushed our athletes to swim their personal bests all day. Standout swims include Junior Joey Hecocks, placing first in the 200 freestyle, and taking 6 seconds off his previous personal best. Sophomore Kaitlyn McCratic took two firsts for the team battling it out in the 50 and 100 yard freestyle events. Sophomore Austin Qualls took three whole seconds off his 100 breastroke time and pushed himself into a first place spot. The Boys 400 Freestyle relay team (Colin Boblet, Joey Hecocks, Jordan Johnson, Brennan Thompson) finished the meet with a first place finish. The girls team (Shelby Warner, Bethanni Riedel, April Johnson, and Kaitlyn McCratic) battled till the end of the day and finished with not only a first but a Sac Joaquin section qualifying time....

Sharon Ash Honored as Mentor of the Month for March 2014

Angels Camp, CA....The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program has designated Arnold resident Sharon Ash as its March Mentor of the Month. Sharon has been matched with sixteen-year-old Diana Westphal for the past seven years. “Sharon and Diana enjoy one of our program’s longest continuous friendships,” said Colleen Dolan, Coordinator of Mentoring Programs for the Calaveras County Office of Education. “This means that they both have contributed a lot to the policies, practices, and general strength of the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program.”

Mark Twain Medical Center Announces 5th Annual Spring Health Fair & Lupus Awareness Fun/Run Walk

Murphys, CA....Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) will be holding its 5th Annual Health Fair and Lupus Fun/Run Walk on Saturday, March 22nd, from 8am until noon at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. Over forty community health related service groups will participate in this community-wide event. A wealth of information will be available on topics such as senior health services, health insurance, nutrition, fitness and diabetes. There will also be a variety of free health screenings – body fat, physical fitness levels, colon cancer screening kits, and metabolic screenings. Low cost testing and services include Blood Analysis ($45), and Bone Density Screenings ($10). In addition to the five-panel blood analysis (this test consists of a chemistry panel, thyroid, complete blood count, lipid panel, iron for women, and PSA for men), the Medical Center will also now screen for vitamin D deficiencies....
