Angels Camp, CA...Sally Kaplan, award-winning screenwriter and director based in Murphys, presents a uniquely creative approach for writers to develop characters, build suspense, and produce visually rich storylines. Her four-session course, Film Techniques for Writers, will take place at Manzanita Arts Emporium in Downtown Angels Camp, 1211 South Main Street (kitty-corner from the Visitors Center), on Thursdays, February 16, 23 and March 2, 9 from 6 to 8 pm.

Los Angeles, CA...California’s educators say White House nominee for U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos would be a disaster for California’s students and public schools. Flanked by the nearly 800 delegates to the CTA State Council of Education, CTA President Eric Heins held a news conference today calling for the rejection of DeVos at her Senate committee confirmation hearing on Tuesday. Educators also approved a resolution demanding the public education all students deserve and inviting Californians to take the pledge to ensure all students can succeed

Calaveras County, CA...Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program. (The first year being Transitional Kindergarten and the second year a more traditional Kindergarten program.) Students may enroll in a Transitional Kindergarten program if they are five years old on September 2 through December 2. Children must be five years old prior to September
2 to enroll in traditional Kindergarten. Parents and guardians may optionally enroll their ageeligible
child in a Transitional Kindergarten program.

Angels Camp, CA...Bret Harte Senior Savannah Wittman took first place in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Voices of Democracy speech contest. Her speech (audio recording attached) addressed the theme: My Responsibility to America. Her first place speech earned her $2000 and a trip to Washington D.C. the last week of February to represent the VFW Department of California as one of 52 high schools students who will compete for the $30,000 national award.

Angels Camp, CA...On Wednesday, January 18 eleven Bret Harte FFA members traveled to Linden High School to compete in the Delta Cal Sectional FFA speaking contest. These competitors participated in four different contests against eighteen other FFA Chapters.
