Angels Camp, CA...(Frogtown, USA)...Seven accomplished young women from across Calaveras County will compete for the title of Miss Calaveras County 2017 at 8:00 pm on Thursday, May 18 at the 2017 Miss Calaveras County Scholarship Pageant. These young women will participate in four phases of competition, including a personal interview, a health and fitness demonstration, a talent segment, and an evening gown speech.

Bret Harte FFA Teams Excelled For Calaveras County At State Judging Finals

Angels Camp, CA...The Bret Harte FFA Chapter proudly represented Calaveras county at the California State FFA Judging Finals in San Luis Obispo on May 5th and 6th. Cal Poly hosted these career development events for over 3,000 FFA members across the state. The Floriculture team placed 4th high team in California with team members Bailey Van Zant, Kaegen Moore, Zoe Hartsinck and Madelyn Ruff. The Livestock judging team had two individuals placing in the top 100, Andrea Diep and Mary Soria along with other team members Dominic Santella and Nick Ratkovich. Both teams proved our motto to be correct, that with sweat, hard work and determination we can have our dreams come true. Congratulations to both teams!

Sutter Creek, CA...On May 31, 2017 from 9:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. at the American Legion Hall, 12134 Airport Road in Sutter Creek the UC Cooperative Extension, Northern California Society of American Foresters, and CAL FIRE will be hosting this one day workshop aimed at foresters, land owners and others who are involved in planning and executing forest restoration projects. It will also be of interest to personnel working for agencies serving these clients. Restoration at multiple scales from the residential forest parcel to the landscape will be addressed.

Burlingame, CA...Rising up together to protect public education and send the message that all students deserve safe schools, thousands of California educators, parents, administrators and students will join in a rapidly growing series of social justice events statewide Monday, May 1, as part of the CTA Day of Action. “This is a day of local resistance to threats to dismantle or privatize public education coming from the Trump administration, and for standing up for the right of all students to feel safe and respected at school, regardless of their immigration status,” said Eric Heins, president of the 325,000-member California Teachers Association. “It’s time to take a stand together for the future of our communities and to demand social justice for all students. Our schools must continue to be community centers, and not become profit centers.”

Columbia College Graduates 34 Fire Academy Students

Columbia, CA...The Columbia College Fire Academy will hold its graduation ceremony and presentation of Certification of Completion to 34 successful students of the Fire Technology Program. The event, which is open to the general public, will be held Thursday, April 27th, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Oak Pavilion at Columbia College. Certificates will be awarded based on the student’s successful completion of the academic and manipulative training as mandated for a California Firefighter 1 Certification. The students must still complete six months of full-time or one year of part-time field experience before applying to the state for Firefighter I Certification. “Some of the graduates will apply or continue with reserve, intern and volunteer positions at local or state-wide fire departments since entering the academy” said Chief Shane Warner, Columbia College Fire Technology Program Coordinator and professor. “Many of the students will continue on to pursue associate degrees in fire technology at Columbia College.” “Some of the students are already applying for seasonal employment with CAL Fire, Forest Service, and local fire agencies said Instructor Andy Van Hoogmoed.
