4-H Youth Development Program is Open for Enrollment

Placerville, CA...We are currently holding Open Enrollment for our 4-H Youth Development Programs in Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado and Tuolumne counties. Enrollment is available all year but October 15, 2017 is the deadline to register for returning members that want to show at county fair. New members must be enrolled by December 1st, 2017 to be eligible for fair. 4-H Youth Development helps young people reach their full potential as competent, confident and caring leaders of character who are connected to others and contribute to their communities.

Freedom From Smoking Class Begins in August

Sonora, CA...Adventist Health Sonora is once again offering the American Lung Association’s Freedom From Smoking® course beginning August 29. Classes will meet each Tuesday and one Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. for seven weeks at Pulmonary Rehabilitation, located at 19747 Greenley Road in Sonora. Freedom From Smoking provides a supportive group environment where adults work through the quitting process together with guidance from a respiratory therapist. According to the American Lung Association, “Research has proven that the more time a smoker spends in a supportive situation, the more likely he or she is to succeed. People who use [Freedom From Smoking] are six times more likely to be smoke-free one year later than those who quit on their own.”

San Andreas, CA...The leading cause of death for Americans 15-20 years old is motor vehicle collisions, (According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) and the CHP’s goal is to reduce the death rate among teenagers as the result of these collisions.

Bret Harte FFA “Get’s it Done” at their Annual Officer Camp

Angels Camp, CA...From July 31st to August 4th the newly elected Bret Harte FFA officer team traveled to Bass Lake to attend their annual officers camp. Bret Harte FFA is lead this year by President -Kaegen Moore, Vice President -Emily Bolton, Secretary -Andrea Diep, Treasurer -Kylie Nordvik, Reporter -Ashlynn Maddeaux, Sentinel -Taylor Fassbender. At officers camp these six individuals worked tirelessly to plan out numerous events, activities, and the beginning of their new FFA website. Additionally the officer team discovered their individual duties so that they have the resources to serve their chapter and community to the best of their ability. The team was lead by their advisor in defining the true meaning of leadership and ultimately they began to realize this years selected theme “It always seems impossible, until it is done.”

Calaveras Community Foundation presents Liz Darby Airola Scholarships for Nursing Students

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) presented a scholarship at the recent Award Night event at Bret Harte High School. These two scholarships were from the Liz Darby Airola Fund for Nursing Students. Each scholarship is in the amount of $500. Bret Harte senior Natalie Huddy is entering the nursing field. She will be attending Dominican University. An excellent student, Natalie has been on the Principal’s Honor Roll during all 4 years of high school. This well-rounded young lady has been involved in several organizations and clubs as well as sports activities. Natalie has held two part-time jobs for the past 3 years. She took the Medical Science class as a senior allowing her to gain experience at Sonora Regional Medical Center and earn her phlebotomy license. She is dedicated to helping others through her nursing career.

Calaveras Supervisors Honor Superintendent of Schools Kathy Northington's 40 Year of Service as an Educator

San Andreas, CA...Retiring Calaveras Superintendent of Education Kathy Northington was honored this morning at the Board of Supervisors Meeting. Kathy attended school at Wallace and Valley Springs elementary schools, graduated from Calaveras High School in 1969 and attended California State University, Sacramento, where she received her bachelor’s degree in child development and her teaching credentials. Kathy returned to Calaveras County as a teacher at Rail Road Flat, Valley Springs and Copperopolis elementary schools from 1977-1987. While teaching she continued her education and received her master’s degree in school administration from the University of San Francisco in 1985.

Veteran & Coach Paul Irving Mulvey Passed Away at 63

Angels Camp, CA...Paul Irving Mulvey passed away Sunday, July 16th, 2017 at the age of 63. He was born September 21st, 1953 in Providence, Rhode Island to Thelma Mulvey and later adopted by his grandparents Louella and Nicholas Mulvey. He served in the Navy for 2 years and was honorably discharged April 11th, 1980. Paul was a teachers aide at Mark Twain Elementary where he also became a basketball coach for the Badgers. He was involved with the Junior Olympics Track and Field event. He then went on to work at Bret Harte High school in the maintenance department and was the head of maintenance when he retired July 2017. At his time at Bret Harte he became the Junior Varsity Girls Basketball coach winning numerous championships.
