California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, University of California President Janet Napolitano, California Community Colleges Chancellor Eloy Ortiz Oakley, and CSU Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs Loren J. Blanchard held a press conference to discuss important steps students can take following a court order that required the Trump Administration to begin accepting DACA renewal applications.

Students entering Kindergarten must be age 5 on or before September 1st, 2018. Those interested in Transitional Kindergarten would need to turn 5 between September 2nd – December 2nd, 2018.

Columbia College Receives State Grant for Fire Science Pre-Apprenticeship Initiative

Columbia, CA...Columbia College has received formal notification of the intent to award, pending Board of Governor's approval and available funds commencing on January 18, 2018, a two-year grant to develop a new Fire Science Pre-Apprenticeship Initiative program. The college will receive $496,804 over two years to implement the Initiative, recruit students, and launch the training with partner agencies. The award, just announced by the California Community College Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO) Workforce and Development Division, is part of the new California Apprenticeship Initiative aimed at broadening the range of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship programs available to California workers.

Join the UCCE Master Gardeners of Amador County on Saturday, February 10, 2018 for this timely class on grafting backyard fruit trees. Local Master Gardeners will present a hands-on clinic covering grafting techniques for home gardeners. Whip, tongue and cleft grafts will be demonstrated and practiced. Bud grafts will also be discussed. Learn how to grow a fruit salad tree. A variety of fruit tree scions will also be available for participants to take home. Handouts will be available. The class is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. All classes are held in the GSA building at 12200-B Airport Rd. in Jackson from 9am to Noon.

Diabetes Drug 'Significantly Reverses Memory Loss' in Mice with Alzheimer's

Lancaster, UK...A drug developed for diabetes could be used to treat Alzheimer's after scientists found it "significantly reversed memory loss" in mice through a triple method of action. The research, published in Brain Research, could bring substantial improvements in the treatment of Alzheimer's disease through the use of a drug originally created to treat type 2 diabetes. Lead researcher Professor Christian Holscher of Lancaster University in the UK said the novel treatment "holds clear promise of being developed into a new treatment for chronic neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease."

Angels Camp, CA...Summary: Bret Harte High School and its Board (BHUHSD) is being challenged by a student who objects to a school policy prohibiting the discussion of religious issues (e.g., "Creationism" and "intelligent design") in natural science classes. The student and his attorney argue that this prohibition is an unconstitutional restriction of his right to free speech. The background to this case is set forth in Part I below. The current school policy is presented in Part II. For those unfamiliar with "intelligent design", a brief summary is provided in Part III.
