Wanting to produce a greatest hits album and the refusal from Motown to release control over their material, The Commodores were forced to create all new digital recordings of their classic hits. Between 1991 and 1992 they had recorded enough material, with J.D. Nicholas and Clyde Orange alternating lead vocals, to release their two disc set Commodores Hits Vol I and Commodores Hits Vol II. In addition to the reemergence of these classic hits, the group also produced an album featuring all-new material, Commodores XX – No Tricks, which was released in 1993 under their own label Commodores Records and Entertainment.
