Calaveras Community Foundation Receives Donation from Save Mart C.A.R.E.S. Foundation

Angels Camp, CA...Calaveras Community Foundation (CCF) has received a generous $5000 donation from Save Mart Companies C.A.R.E.S. Foundation. This donation benefits the Career and Technical Training (C&TT) Scholarship Fund. This marks the ninth year in a row that the C.A.R.E.S. Foundation has supported this scholarship program for local high school students. “We are very proud to give back to the Calaveras community,” expresses John Romine, Save Mart store manager. “The Calaveras Community Foundation is a great community partner that aims to provide opportunities to students in technical and vocational careers

Railtown 1897 Offers Wildly Popular Wildflower Trains -- 4/13, 14, 20 & 21!

Jamestown, CA...With an extraordinary spring wildflower season expected this year, California State Parks, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park and the California State Railroad Museum Foundation are proud to provide guests with a unique opportunity to experience spring wildflowers from aboard a historic train. While the Park is open daily, special Wildflower Train Rides are available on two weekends – April 13-14 & 20-21 – and depart from the Depot promptly at 3 p.m. Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to learn about the wildflowers of California’s Sierra Nevada foothills with an informative naturalist presentation at 2:30 p.m.

Caltrans’ Crews Fighting Deep Snow On Way To Summit

Lake Alpine, CA...Caltrans’ Camp Connell Maintenance Supervisor Mike Johnson shot some video of the walls of snow leading to the Lake Alpine Lodge his crews have cut through in the fight to clear snow from Ebbetts Pass/State Route 4 (SR-4) for the summer season. The video shows the progress for the first week of snow removal on SR-4 with 10’-14’ drifts (and snow currently falling!). Crews across the range are finding deeper than usual drifts at lower elevations as the annual clearing proceeds.

Christine has been matched with her twelve-year-old mentee, Aeryn, for almost a year and a half. “Christine is the perfect mentor for Aeryn,” said Kathryn Eustis, director of Student Support Services for the Calaveras County Office of Education. “She has a deep understanding of kids and showers Aeryn with love and attention.”

Job Fair Highlights Lots & Lots of Organizations Hiring Here

Columbia, CA...Columbia College held a Community Job Fair that was cosponsored with Mother Lode Job Training. The event hosted 66 employers and that filled the Oak Pavilion April 5 at Columbia College. In talking to several of the organizations there it seemed the only thing missing was waves of job seekers. They felt there may be several reasons for this. Many young kids graduating from our local schools wanted to explore the outside world for at least a few years before possibly returning home. It also creates opportunities for those wishing to move here. There are many, many job openings in our area. Some required a college degree but many of the openings did not...

Today we’ll see a chance of snow mostly before 11am and winds decreasing to 5-11mph out of the SSW in the a.m. and shifting to the Northwest in the afternoon.Things are looking fairly clear into Friday as high pressure returns and the weekend has unsettled weather possibly but that’s still far out there and things are trending drier at this time.
