San Andreas, CA...ON Saturday Mark Twain Medical Center held their 20th Annual Health Fair. These are great events for local residents. Low or no cost health screenings and tests, healthcare community info & more. They also delivered 411 Flu shots to keep Calaveras flu free this winter.

Murphys, CA...Missing your parakeet? The Rugos report that for all the lost and sometimes seemingly abandoned critters that have showed up on their ranch over the years, this is a first. Blue and white parakeet obviously socialized but keeping his or her distance. Very happy to be finding seed among the goat and horse hay. If yours, please contact us at 728-9170.

Angels Camp, CA...Having relocated back to Angels Camp, Signal Service recently completed its sign on the side of its new Cornerstone Building home. Owners Will, Mark and Andy Wilson were thrilled to be able to resurrect the original ‘frog logo’ that had been replaced some time ago. Speaking about the new 10’ X 12’ sign painted directly onto the brick wall of the building, Andy says “Having expanded up into El Dorado County and down to Sacramento, we sort of outgrew the frog logo. As our service area expanded we felt subscribers might not identify with the frog, and adopted something more generic. That said, we’ve all had a certain fondness for our frog, and we’re glad to have him back”.

Angels-Murphys Rotary Club Collecting Gently Used Shoes to Help Soles4Souls Fight Global Poverty |

Murphys, CA...One person’s unwanted shoes can help provide meaningful opportunities that many in developing nations need, which is why the members of the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club have re-launched their annual shoe drive to collect at least 1,000 pairs of new or gently used shoes. The shoes that Rotary collects will be delivered to Soles4Souls–a non-profit social enterprise committed to fighting poverty through the collection and distribution of shoes and clothing.that creates sustainable jobs and provides relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. Founded in 2006, the organization has distributed more than 30 million pairs of new and used shoes in 127 countries.

Murphys, CA...Stomp competition, costume contests, and street fair brings thousands of people to historic Downtown Murphys for a day of fun and entertainment for all the first Saturday in October! Crowds of over 5,000 people from near and far flood the little town of Murphys, to celebrate the beginning of the wine harvest season. Murphys puts on a lively stomp competition. This exciting all-day event happens on the first Saturday in October every year, and includes the Gold Rush Street Fair lining Main Street with over 100 outside vendors. Now in its 25th year, the annual community Grape Stomp has grown to include over 120 teams vying to be known as “Champion of the Juice” or winner of the “Best Costume” award. Come witness the Largest and Oldest Grape Stomp Competition in California!

Sonora, CA...Open house meeting. Tuesday, Oct. 2, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor’s Office 19777 Greenley Road, Sonora, CA 95370. Forest Supervisor Jason Kuiken will host an open house Tuesday, Oct 2, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Stanislaus National Forest Supervisor’s Office. Members of the public may review maps and discuss the draft Environmental Impact Statement alternatives with forest staff. Maps of the proposed Over-Snow vehicle-use designations for each alternative will be on display. The Forest Service, through the OSV-Use Designation project, will designate National Forest System snow trails and areas for public OSV use on the Stanislaus NF, as well as identifying those trails that will be groomed on the forest.
