New Science Fair Award Named After Prominent Local Scientist

Angels Camp, CA...Residents of Calaveras County may be surprised to learn that Albert Michelson, the first American scientist awarded the Nobel Prize, lived in Murphys, CA as a child. A plaque marks the location of his childhood home on Main Street. This piece of local folklore continues to be an inspiration for many. A small group of individuals have recently formed a new advisory council to encourage increased participation in county level STEM activities such as the Calaveras County Science Fair. They have raised money and dedicated their time to creating prizes for science fair project category winners.

13th Annual ‘Take a Chance on Love’ Event Raises $17,000

Jackson, CA...On Monday, February 14, Hospice of Amador & Calaveras announced the eight lucky winners in the 13 th Annual ‘Take a Chance on Love’ Valentine’s Day Drawing at the Jackson Hospice Thrift Store which was livestreamed on KVGC Radio and Facebook. Executive Director Ariane Debien said, “I am truly overwhelmed to learn of the community’s continued generosity to Hospice of Amador & Calaveras. This year’s event raised $17k with the sale of 3,300 tickets. I want to thank our generous prize donors, volunteers, and everyone who purchased a ticket to support our hospice mission.”

A Beary Good Day at the 49th Annual Bjornloppet in Bear Valley

Bear Valley, CA...A spectacular day at the 49th Annual Bjornloppet XC Ski Race in Bear Valley. A total of 64 skiers competed on both classic and skate skis over three courses (5K, 10K, & 20K). Conditions were fast and spicy, and many smiles were had amongst new and old friends. The race results will be posted soon.  Thanks to our sponsors (Toko, Snowshoe Brewery, & FarWest Nordic), volunteers (Gail, Heidi, Presley, & Haruka), and the BVAC staff for making the day a success.

At higher elevations, a chance of rain and snow showers in the late evening and early morning. Snow showers late in the night. At lower elevations, a chance of rain showers late in the evening. Rain showers likely after midnight, then rain and snow showers likely late in the night. Breezy, colder. Lows 15 to 30 higher elevations...27 to 37 lower elevations. Little or no snow accumulation lower elevations...up to 3 inches higher elevations. Snow level 6500 feet decreasing to 5500 feet after midnight. Prevailing southwest winds 10 to 25 mph decreasing to 5 to 15 mph after midnight. Gusts up to 40 mph. Over ridges...prevailing southwest winds 20 to 35 mph.
