Calaveras artists are excited to welcome you into their homes and studios from which you can see and purchase their creations. Greet and talk 30 artists during the Calaveras Artists Studio Tour, Saturday and Sunday, September 29-30. The tour brings artists and art lovers together in relaxed and friendly environments where the various elements of art are shared and enjoyed. Artists will be on hand from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on both days for questions and discussion as they “show their process” and reveal how, why and where they create their artwork. Angels Camp, CA...For those who know me, know that I have very little patience for governmental programs that are designed around a never-ending process that seldom, if ever, produces any results. So much of government programs are set up on process as a priority, and results are secondary. I have dealt with numerous programs designed to help small public water systems. These water systems are told that they might get funding that will reimburse them for their initial engineering reports and application costs, but only if they are successful in persevering until the end. If they don’t persevere until the end, or if they fail to make the cut, then none of their costs and efforts are covered. This is almost always a cripping financial disaster for these small systems, and therefore, they do everything they can to avoid beomg sucked into this destructive plan...

Sonora, CA...We had the pleasure of talking with young entrepreneur Rachael Shevlin who is the new owner of Doc's Smoked BBQ and Burgers on Stockton Road in Sonora. She is just 22 and purchased the popular restaurant recently when she was still only 21 years old. While young chronologically she already has 8 years of restaurant industry experience. She also attended the Columbia College Culinary program and is putting experience and local education to great use. She worked and learned all of the Smokey and BBQ'ey secrets of Doc's for a year and a half before she took the plunge into ownership. She plans on keeping the menu that has attracted legions of loyal followers the same. She has added a salad as a small offering to segment of the population that is more leafy greens inclined. Other than that it is just polishing and refining a proven concept....
