Attempted Murder Charges, $2,195,000 Bail & More for Thomas Bechtold |

Valley Springs, CA...On 4/3/2020, at about 1630 hours, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, along with the California Highway Patrol were dispatched to the intersection of Nall Street and Westhill Road in Valley Springs, for a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian. When deputies arrived, they learned 29-year-old Thomas Bechtold was involved in a verbal argument with 47-year-old James Leslie. Bechtold got into his vehicle and struck Leslie with vehicle, knocking him unconscious before fleeing the area. The Sheriff’s Office conducted an investigation and left seeking Bechtold in connection to what occurred.

AG Issues Updated Consumer Alert for Tenants Affected by COVID-19 |

Sacramento, CA...Following the Judicial Council of California's emergency meeting, California Attorney General Xavier Becerra issued updated guidance to California tenants, encouraging them to learn about their rights if they will not be able to pay their full rent as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Attorney General encourages tenants to learn about their rights under the state Judicial Council’s April 6 emergency eviction rule, which expanded the statewide protections previously put in place by Governor Gavin Newsom’s executive order at the end of March.

Sheriff's Deputies May Cite Violators in Covid-19 "Essential Travel" Updated Education & Enforcement. |

Sonora, CA...Tuolumne County Health Officer Dr. Eric Sergienko released updated orders for our county yesterday. The order specifically outlines what “essential travel” means and what activities “essential travel” includes. In addition to the clarification from the county health officer, the Bureau of Reclamation and the Unites States Forest Service have increased their efforts to close recreational access points throughout the county. Tuolumne County has been fortunate to have only one confirmed case of Covid-19. Our neighboring counties continue to battle the virus with Stanislaus County announcing 81 confirmed cases and Calaveras County with five confirmed cases.

Covid-19 Jail Inmate Release Update |

Sonora, CA...With the recent decision made by the Judicial Council of California (JCC), the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office will be releasing additional inmates. JCC stated the bail for low level felonies and most misdemeanors will now have a bail at $0. With these new criteria, the Tuolumne County Sheriff’s Office will release 14 pretrial inmates.

Calaveras Correction Officer Arrested on Domestic Violence Charges |

San Andreas, CA...On March 6, 2020, The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a domestic violence incident that occurred in 2019. The domestic violence victim reported that a Calaveras County Correctional Officer had committed domestic violence related crimes against the victim while off duty in 2019. The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office took an initial crime report from the victim and immediately contacted the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office. The Sheriff’s Office requested the District Attorney’s Office take over the investigation. This was done to avoid any conflict of interest issues.
