Early Morning Traffic Stop Leads to Gun & Drug Seizure

Tuolumne, CA...Early Sunday Morning, Deputy Hammell was patrolling the area of Tuolumne City. During his patrol, he spotted a vehicle with several equipment violations. Deputy Hammell conducted a traffic enforcement stop on the driver, 20-year-old Colby Hathcoat of Twain Harte.
Sonora, CA...A shout out to Rose Wolf Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Center! On Friday, a resident of North Stewart Street called in a baby bird that seemed to be having troubles. Officers arrived and discovered the bird was a baby turkey (or poult). After giving the little feller some water, we called out Rose Wolf Wildlife Rescue, who responded quickly and took the poult for further care.

I want to begin today, though, by expressing my condolences for the community in Surfside, Florida. I know how difficult it is for the families who have lost and for those who are waiting to hear. And I've expressed great gratitude for the first responders and for the others who were assisting in the ongoing rescue operation. I know that the federal government is providing assistance to the state and local governments, and we stand ready as things develop to provide more assistance if it is required.
Attempted Murder Charges for James Christopher, 62 in Yesterday's Cascade Shooting

Sonora, CA...The Tuolumne Sheriff's Dept has released additional details on the shooting yesterday. Yesterday morning, just before 8 am, our office received numerous reports of a person actively shooting at someone in a vehicle at the Cascade Mobile Home Park in Sonora. Deputies, along with the Sheriff’s SWAT Team who was training in the area, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, deputies were pointed to 62-year-old James Christopher of Sonora standing on the front porch of a residence. Christopher complied with orders and was quickly handcuffed and secured in a patrol vehicle. Deputies contacted two victims at a vehicle parked near the residence and began rendering aid. The SWAT Team conducted a check of the area for additional suspects or victims, but none were located.

Valley Springs, CA...On 6-24-21 at about 0048 hours, a Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office Deputy conducted a traffic stop for a moving violation near the Chevron gas station in Valley Springs. A records check of the driver, identified as Michael Rios (age 34 of Tracy), revealed a misdemeanor bench warrant for violation of a court order with $30,000 bail. Rios was arrested for the outstanding warrant and drug paraphernalia was found on his person during search incident to arrest. Additionally, several firearms, various ammunition and several counterfeit bills were located during a search of his vehicle.

Washington, DC...The US Supreme Court upheld the current Fourth Amendment protections and refused to expand the scope of police rights to enter a home without a warrant. Under the Fourth Amendment pursuit of a fleeing misdemeanor suspect does not always or categorically qualify as an exigent circumstance justifying a warrantless entry into a home.
