Sheriff-Coroner James W. Mele's Last Day Will Be June 30th

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/15/2018 10:55 AM
Sonora, CA...I am announcing that June 30, 2018 will be my last day as Sheriff-Coroner of Tuolumne County. With the uncertainty of the 2018-2019 budget I feel that my last act as Sheriff should be with certainty. As you are aware this budget cycle is a very tight budget. This will allow a savings for a whole year versus only half of the year because of my higher salary. The difference comes in the longevity of my thirty years with this organization, where Undersheriff Pooley has six years of longevity with us. This will allow the movement of the new Undersheriff position to be filled; however, I will be recommending to not fill the vacated Lieutenant position until or after Mid-Year at the earliest.

Bear Valley, CA...On March 14, 2018, at approximately 11:00pm Jane-Drummond Mullarkey reported to the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office that her husband, Thomas Mullarkey, had not returned to their cabin after a day of skiing at the Bear valley Resort. The Alpine County Sheriff’s Office initiated a full-scale search that continued for five days during which heavy snow, avalanche danger and poor visibility conditions persisted. Based on information gathered by investigators, the search was focused within the resort’s boundary. On March 19, 2018, the Alpine County Sheriff’s Office reduced the search to a limited but continuous search both within the resort’s perimeter and surrounding backcountry as the snow pack melted.

Posted by: thepinetree on 05/11/2018 09:02 AM
Murphys, CA...It is the obligation of every government to provide for the public safety and security of its citizens. For local jurisdictions this responsibility includes the provision of law enforcement, fire protection, and health care. In many localities, such as Calaveras County, the only direct input the public has in how these services are delivered is limited to the election of a Sheriff to manage law enforcement.
