Celebrate Spring Aboard Railtown 1897’s Wildflower Train Behind the Famous Sierra No. 3!

Jamestown, CA....With spring in full bloom, Railtown 1897 State Historic Park (SHP) is proud to provide guests with a unique opportunity to experience spring wildflowers from aboard a train pulled by the “Movie Star Locomotive” Sierra No. 3! While the Park is open daily, special Wildflower Train Rides are available on two Saturday afternoons -- April 12 & 19 -- and depart from the Railtown 1897 Depot promptly at 4:30 p.m. Prior to boarding the train, passengers will have the opportunity to learn about the wildflowers of California’s Sierra Nevada foothills. In addition, the Tuolumne County Master Gardeners will have a display at the Park on these special days with information about gardening with native plants...

Bear Valley, CA – February 27, 2014– Our snow dances worked and it is game on for the Freeheel Festival! A celebration of telemark, randonee, alpine touring, backcountry and splitboard riders, the new Freeheel Festival takes the best of the Bear Valley Telemark Festival and welcomes everyone who earns their turns. “Everything you loved about the Telemark Festival plus more enthusiasts and more styles,” says owner Aaron Johnson. Three days of educational clinics, all terrain adventure race, backcountry tours, and banquets. The festival begins on Friday, March 28th at Bear Valley Mountain and continues through Sunday March 30th. Folks can attend the whole weekend package for $235 or register for events a la carte starting at $50. Each day offers instruction from the most talented pool of professional ski instructors assembled in the West including Alison Gannett of the Rippin’ Chix Steeps Camps and Save our Snow Foundation...

Judge Douglas Mewhinney Chosen Murphys Irsh Day Parade Grand Marshal

Murphys, CA....The Hon. Douglas V. Mewhinney, who recently retired as the Presiding Judge of the Calaveras County Superior Court, will be the Grand Marshall when the Murphys Irish Day Parade makes its way down Main Street on Saturday, March 15, starting at 11 a.m. “We feel the Grand Marshall should be someone who has played an important role in making our area the wonderful place that it is,” states Carrie Nelson, who with her husband Gerry oversees the parade. “Judge Mewhinney certainly meets that criteria.” Mewhinney has served the county in a number of roles since 1977 when he was chosen to be the Deputy District Attorney. He later became District Attorney and then transferred to the other side of the bench as a Justice Court Judge. He has been a Superior Court judge since 1998....

Valley Springs, CA...Local MMA Fighter and now IFC Champion Nick Kohring received his Championship belt last Saturday night at the Pizza Factory in Valley Springs. The community came together to honor one of their own on his success. He will be wasting no time in defending his new hardware. Tomorrow at the Feather Falls Casino & Lodge he will be battling Christopher Magnani for the main fight of the bout.
