Murphys Old Timers Museum Will Display "Cattle in the Sierra" Through April 29th

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/23/2018 08:55 AM
Murphys, CA...Funded by a California Stories grant from California Humanities, the Murphys Old Timers Museum, has produced an exhibit on the long-established practice of transhumance in the California Foothills and Sierra Nevada. Since gold was discovered in California in the winter of 1848, cattle have roamed the foothills in winter and spring, summered in the rich grasslands of the Sierra Nevada, and returned to their lowland homes in the fall. This annual pattern (transhumance), with established ranches and farms in the lower elevations and summer camps and pasturages in the high mountain meadows, is rapidly disappearing. Threatened with the diminishing price of beef to producers, difficulties in transporting livestock to their summer ranges, and environmental regulations, this 160-year old California tradition may disappear in the near future. Proponents of grazing argue that this will result in loss of mountain meadows and ponds as well as lowland ranches with their grass ranges to residential sprawl. Some environmental and hiking groups contend that livestock grazing in the mountains has led to degradation of streams and native ecosystems. The exhibit, and a video, recount the stories of historic cattle ranching in the California foothills and its battle to stay alive in the face of current environmental and economic challenges, also addressing the effects of its continued operation on mountain ecosystems. Utilizing historical and current photographs and the installation of a 1911 high country cow camp, this exhibit argues that by working together to solve grazing issues, ranchers, the Forest Service, scientists, environmental groups, and the public can resolve their differences, resulting in a win-win for all. A 15-minute video, presenting both sides of the issue and a hope for reconciliation, is forthcoming.

2" of New "Pure Mountain Fun" & Much More on the Way Says Mattly Trent

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/23/2018 08:38 AM
Bear Valley, CA....Hey Good People!. Yesterday brought us 2″ of new snow and fun was had by all! Today we’ll see a high of 42F with an East wind from 5-7mph. The pressure gradient will tighten up in the next 24hrs and bring increased wind values to the area so tonight winds could gust into the low 20’s and Wednesday we could see those winds move up into the high 30’s ahead of the next storm wave. Wednesday night 5-9″ of new snow is expected with another 2-4″ for Thursday. Wind transported snow will redistribute around the resort so we could see some higher snow totals in certain “pockets” of the resort. With SSW winds for the coming event it’s likely to help us with better coverage in the Porridge Bowl and Lift line areas. Fingers crossed Good People as more terrain is about to come online! Remember, we’re about “Pure Mtn Fun” so come check us out this Winter !!!!! stay tuned………………………….

Yosemite National Park To Remain Open During Government Shutdown ~ Rep. Tom McClintock CA-04

Posted by: thepinetree on 01/19/2018 08:12 PM
Roseville, CA...The House yesterday passed a bill to continue to fund the government through February 16th to accommodate ongoing discussions over budget caps, immigration policy and other issues. If Senate Democrats use the Senate cloture rule to prevent the bill from being taken up, the government will shut down at midnight on January 19th. The vendors, visitors and gateway communities to our national parks suffered enormously during the government shutdown in 2013 because of deliberate actions by the Obama administration. The administration ordered businesses in the parks to cease operations, cancelled long-standing tourist reservations, barricaded park entrances and even blocked turn-out lanes overlooking the Yosemite Valley. The shutdown required none of these measures.
