Two-Time GRAMMY Winning artist to perform inside Moaning Cavern
Vallecito, CA – On Saturday, October 27 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Moaning Cavern will welcome back Native American Flutist Mary Youngblood and the Northern California Flute Circle for a “back by popular demand” concert inside the cavern, located at 5350 Moaning Cave Rd. in Vallecito. Tickets are $24.95 for space on the cavern floor, and $19.95 for space at the top of Moaning Cavern’s famous spiral staircase. Advance reservations are highly recommend because last year’s concert sold out. Reservations can be made by calling (209) 736-2708.
Bending tradition, Mary Youngblood is a modern American Indian woman often touted as the first Native American female to professionally record the Native flute. Verifying her talent and mastery of this ancient instrument, she was the first woman to win the 'Flutist of the Year' award at the Native American Music Awards (NAMMYS). She has released six recordings including the Grammy winning ‘Beneath the Raven Moon,’ and her current release, ‘Dance with the Wind,’ which was also awarded the Grammy for Best Native American Music Album at the 2007 ceremony.
Youngblood’s debut album, 'The Offering,' was recorded live in the cavern, the natural acoustics lending an amazing echo and organic quality to the distinctly memorable melodies that Youngblood created with her flutes. It is that unique sound that brings her back to Moaning Cavern for this encore performance. The Northern California Flute Circle, a group of amateur Native flutists and percussionists co-founded by Youngblood herself, promise to, once again, bring a depth and dimension of sound to the cavern.
Concert goers are asked to remember the natural environment within the cavern. Light jackets are recommended and those seated on the cavern floor should bring a blanket, cushion or low back collapsible chair or stool. Anything carried into the cavern, must be carried out, so keep items small.
