November Alzheimer Awareness
November is National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month Foothill Village honors and supports those living with the disease
Angels Camp, CA (November 2015) Alzheimer’s disease is readily becoming an all to familiar term to millions of Americans. Over 5 million people in this country alone have been diagnosed with the disease, and this number is expected to triple by mid-century. When health trends such as these are rising, often so do the resources. Today there is more information and support, providing better understanding about Alzheimer’s and how to live with it. One area in particular that has benefited from greater understanding is the development of residential care programs often called memory care. Families should visit reputable websites, join support groups, speak with healthcare professionals, read books and literature to learn as much about the can situation at hand. There are in fact “right ways and a wrong ways” to deliver good care.
Common tips include: 1) don’t argue 2) encourage independence as long as possible 3) establish a daily routine 4) review your home for safety and 5) keep the person busy with productive activities such as folding laundry or gardening.
Check out community and local based services
Families often wait and wait to utilize important community based services such as the
Alzheimer’s Association, support groups and day centers. Utilize these services early and often, noting that they not only can be therapeutic for the person but also provide needed respite for the caregiver.
Learn about care options
While most of the care is provided at home by friends and family, many people do end up requiring more care as time and the disease progress. What for example would happen if the well caregiver got sick or died? Families should make a plan for the future; investigating In-home services and memory care residences. Involve the person with Alzheimer’s disease when possible. Be as open with the person about his or her situation as possible (showing common sense). It is okay to make a decision for their family member if it is in his or her best interest. In a case where the person is resistant, get help from a doctor and/or emphasize the service or placement isn’t a final decision.
Acknowledge family differences
Conflict among siblings or relatives is not uncommon. When conflict occurs, seek a
trusted mediator and work to resolve differences as best as possible. Note that denial is
also common but eventually fades in most cases. One tip – focus on what is best for the
person now vs. past wishes and promises. Another tip – ask what the person would have wanted the family to do if asked before he or she became ill (many times, families agree that mom would have not wanted to be a burden or would have wanted the family to look at the big picture).

Children & Seniors
Fifteen-year-old Daphne Beach thought about her grandmother while making holiday cards for homebound seniors last Friday night.
“I help my grandma, and she’s old. I really like to help old people. I feel bad for them,” she said as she colored in a smiling teddy bear holding a present on a pre-printed card.
Tuolumne County is home to thousands of isolated adults and senior citizens whose social interaction is limited — they rarely get visitors, holiday cards or Christmas presents. A few community groups and schools are trying to change that.
Earlier this week, Mark Twain Elementary School second-graders made crafts and cards for residents at Foothill Village Assisted Living in Angels Camp.
“We were trying to make them happy,” said Kent Knick, 7.
The seniors had huge smiles on their faces when the children presented the holiday cards to them.
“It feels really good,” said Weslie Norman, 7, about giving gifts to the seniors.
Last Friday night, a group of about 20 volunteers gathered at the Tuolumne County Senior Center to make 250 Thanksgiving and 250 Christmas cards for people who receive Meals on Wheels.
It was a project for youth enrolled in Mentoring Works and Friday Night Live, both run by the Amador-Tuolumne Community Action Agency.
Friday Night Live member Keith Avila, 15, of Soulsbyville, said he knows what it feels like to be away from loved ones and that it feels good to help someone feel better.
“I feel like I’m helping out,” he said.
“The folks who get the cards treasure them,” said Elena Linehan, Mentoring Works coordinator.
“Everybody needs a friend. We don’t know their names and they don’t know ours, but there’s that friendship that bridges the gap. We do care about them.”

Soroptimist International of Calaveras County Enchanted Teddy Bear Tea
Soroptimists Bring Fairytale Enchantment to Beloved Holiday Event
For the past seventeen years, Soroptimists International of Calaveras County have provided local children of all ages with a magical way to kick off the holiday season. The annual Teddy Bear Tea complete with Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, ballerinas and dancing teddy bears has delighted generations. This year’s event promises to continue the tradition while adding a new atmosphere of fantasy where dreams can come true.
Under the direction of Fairy Godmother, Kathy Mazzaferro, this year’s entertainment promises to be a more interactive event for all guests. Over twenty local actors have volunteered their time and will be singing and dancing their way throughout the afternoon. Every table will have a special fairytale character, from Cinderella to Peter Pan, as a host. Guests are, as always, encouraged to dress up and can even come as their favorite fairytale princess or character.
Join us for an afternoon of high tea, music, entertainment, crafts and merriment. The Enchanted Teddy Bear Tea will take place on Sunday, November 15, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm at Mark Twain Hall at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds. Tickets are $27.00 for adults and children 10 and up; children’s tickets for those 9 and under are $15.00. Reservations are required and may be obtained by calling (209) 753-9700.
