All Day Boogie Woogie Over To SRT’s Bulwark Of A Basement
Columbia, CA...The Church Basement Ladies return to the Sierra Repertory’s Fallon House Theatre October 14 through November 27 in A Mighty Fortress Is Our Basement. Directed by original Sierra Rep church lady Becky Saunders, the production will feature a brand new cast along with upbeat, fun new songs and story.

cbl1
The year is 1960, and a reformation is underway. Against the changing tide, the Church Basement Ladies stand strong in their faith and in their friendships. Beverly, the young daughter of Karin, gets her first pair of high heels for confirmation; their very nervous Pastor makes it to the alter on time; Mrs. Snustad and Mrs. Gilmerson plan a food booth at the County Fair to raise money; and Mrs. Engelson embarks on a spontaneous driving lesson.

The Lutheran pastor's pretty young girlfriend causes some commotion among the faithful and no one is taking it harder than senior stateswoman Vivian, played by SRT newcomer Regina Harbour. Young Beverly, played by Elizabeth McMonagle (The Robber Bridegroom, The Spitfire Grill, Putnam County Spelling Bee), is caught between being a girl and becoming a woman as she awaits her confirmation during a time when women's liberation is just beginning to be a topic of discussion. Her mother, Karin, played by local actress Catherine Gordon (SRT’s Dames At Sea, One Foot On The Floor, Gold Dust), is on an emotional rollercoaster that has her veering between tirades and tears, while Mavis, played by another local actress, Debi Woodall (SRT’s The Sound of Music, Damn Yankees, Big River), is a salt-of-the-earth type who is worried about losing part of her farm to Eisenhower’s new interstate. The pastor, played by Christopher Vettel (Church Basement Ladies, Les Misérables), is quite the nervous groom and delivers a sort of running commentary from the pulpit, not of Bible verses but rather the often-ridiculous church "news" unfolding around him.

Director Becky Sanders played Mavis in the first in the series of The Church Basement Ladies and the sequel, A Second Helping. In addition, she just appeared in the The Robber Bridegroom and directed Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike and last season’s Always, Patsy Cline. Other performances include Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks, Disney’s Beauty and The Beast and The Honky Tonk Angels.

A Mighty Fortress Is Our Basement opens Friday, October 14 and runs through Sunday, November 27 with performances Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Thursdays at either 2 or 7 p.m. A special “Talk Back” performance is Thursday, October 27. Tickets are from $32 to $37, with senior, student and child discounts available. The show is rated G. For tickets and information visit www.sierrarep.org or call the Box Office at 209-532-3120.

Milliaire Winery is a small family-owned winery founded by Liz and Steve Millier in 1983 in the cellar of their former home in Murphys CA. In 1990, the winery moved to an old Flying A gas station on Main Street in Murphys. The whole building was utilized for daily operations; barrels stacked in the repair bays, wine tanks in the backyard, bottling in the front yard and the tasting room in the office. There were jokes about what was in "those tanks" and a friend of the Milliers' dubbed it the "Roadside Chateau". Following their dreams of making premium wines from the Sierra Foothills, today Milliaire Winery has expanded and occupies over an 8,000 square foot winery with a dedicated barrel room and modern crush pad facility. The Milliaire Winery tasting room still resides in the old "Roadside Chateau" at 276 Main Street.

06:00 PM David Vassar Presents "Generation On The Wind"
Sonora, CA...On November 11, David Vassar will be a featured presenter at the ITSA Film Festival in Sonora on November 11, 2016. (http://itsafilmfestival.com/special-presentation-david-vassar-2016/) For the first time in 35 years, his Academy Award-nominated documentary Generation on the Wind will be presented in its entirety in this very special sneak peak not-to-be-missed presentation.

david-vassar
In 1976, the price of oil soared and domestic reserves plummeted resulting in long lines at gas stations. President Carter declared an ‘energy crisis.’ When David Vassar, then only 26-years old, learned about a group of backyard mechanics, artists and environmentalists who were building a windmill to generate electricity on a remote island off the coast of Massachusetts, he sensed a story.

After raising independent financing from his lawyer and landlord, Vassar spent a solid year documenting the construction of the giant wind turbine. It was an engineering story as well as a story of the American Spirit, but most of all it was a story about generating power from a renewable resource.

In 1978, the Cutty Hunk windmill was the largest wind turbine ever constructed for the generation of electricity. It wasn’t built by General Electric or funded by the Department of Energy, it was built by hand with private money from small investors. Although retired from use, the Cutty Hunk windmill provided years of service and more importantly, ‘proof of concept’ for what is now a ubiquitous source of renewable energy.

In 1981, the 58-minute film was cut down to 22-minutes for educational distribution and classroom use. During that process, the original A/B negative was cut and the trims from the 58-minute version were lost. All that remained on the original version was a 16mm color reversal internegative, or CRI; a few 16mm release prints; and the one-inch video tape that was broadcast on PBS.

In 2016, Josef Lindner and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Archive (http://www.oscars.org) completed a painstaking reconstruction and restoration of the 58-minute program, using the original A/B negative and the CRI as a C-roll. The original 35mm magnetic audio tracks were also found and included in the reconstruction.

Immediately after the Generation on the Wind presentation, Vassar will present a sneak-peek of selected scenes from Backcountry Pictures’ current production, Exquisite Wasteland, co-produced with Sally Kaplan, which advocates
for desert protection and features scenes from Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks, and the Mojave National Preserve.
07:00 PM Leg Lamp & BB Gun: The Stars Of Sierra Rep’s A Christmas Story
Sonora, CA...Sierra Repertory Theatre presents a stage adaptation of the nostalgic holiday film, “A Christmas Story,” November 11 – December 18 at the East Sonora Theatre on Mono Way.

rwm_4512
The 1983 movie has become a bona fide Christmas perennial with its affectionate, wacky and realistic portrayal of an American family’s typical Christmas joys and travails. The drama follows 9-year-old Ralphie Parker in his quest to get a genuine Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model Air Rifle under the tree for Christmas. Ralphie pleads his case before his mother, father, his teacher and even Santa Claus himself. The consistent response: “You’ll shoot your eye out!”

“It’s always fun and challenging to translate iconic holiday movies to the stage.” SRT Artistic Director Scott Viets said. “We’ve done it before with White Christmas, It’s A Wonderful Life and now, A Christmas Story. These shows are very well-written and evoke a warm nostalgia for holidays past – and they are challenging in that you are working with movies that are so beloved. There are certain expectations of how it should feel and look when presented on stage. The nature of it being live will make it fresh and unique while hopefully capturing the essence of what continues to make these stories so enduring decade after decade.”

In the stage adaptation the adult Ralph serves as the play’s leading character and narrator, the storyteller on stage who reminiscences about his childhood. All the elements from the cherished motion picture are here, including young Ralphie Parker’s shocking discovery that his Little Orphan Annie decoder pin is really a device to promote Ovaltine; the family’s temperamental exploding furnace; the Bumpus hounds; the school bully Scut Farkas; the boys’ experiment with a wet tongue on a cold lamppost; a major award in the shape of a leg; Ralphie’s fantasy scenarios; and most crucially, Ralphie’s unstoppable campaign to get Santa – or anyone else – to give him a Red Ryder air rifle.

Twelve-year-old Joey Fitzgerald (Mary Poppins, Macbeth, A Columbia Christmas Carol) plays the role of young Ralphie Parker and Carter Peterson (The Music Man) plays the school bully. Other children rounding out the youth cast include Noah Diamond, Cole Harvey, Autumn Jachetta, Ruby James, Kallie Stofle and Jacob Tangenberg.

The adult cast is headed by SRT newcomer Kevin McKillip as Ralph/The Narrator. McKillip makes his home in Chicago, has appeared at theaters across the country and has been nominated three times for the

Joseph Jefferson Award for Best Supporting Actor. Kevin Crowley also appears for the first time at SRT in the role of the The Old Man. Crowley is an actor and director with Second City and has also appeared at theaters nationwide. His television credits include CSI and Murphy Brown and films include Major League and The Fugitive. Other adults in the cast include Cathy Schenkelberg (Honky Tonk Angels, Les Miz) returning to SRT to play Ralphie’s Mother, and SRT newcomer Dionna Eshleman as Ralphie’s teacher, Miss Shields.

The set is designed by Dana Moran Williams (The Drowsy Chaperone, Anna in the Tropics, Forever Plaid), with costumes by Diana Newington (A Columbia Christmas Carol, Hank Williams: Lost Highway). SRT resident artists complete the production team: lighting design by Michael Sali, properties design by Matt Sweetland, and stage management by Emily Gatesman.

A Christmas Story opens Friday, November 11 and runs through Sunday, December 18 with performances Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. and Thursdays at either 2 or 7 p.m. A special question and answer “talk back” will follow the Thursday, December 1 performance. Tickets cost from $32 to $37, with senior, student and child discounts available. The show is rated G for audiences six and up (children under the age of six are not allowed in the theatre). For tickets and information, visit www.sierrarep.org or call the Box Office at 209-532-3120.
07:30 PM Aoife O’Donovan Comes To The Black Bart Playhouse
Murphys, CA...Join us on Friday November, 11th at the Black Bart Playhouse in Murphys to experience the musical talents of Aoife O'Donovan.

bw_desk_chattman_hi
Critically lauded Aoife O’Donovan, who “has one of those beautiful, breathy, so-intimate-it’s-almost-anonymous voices,” (Washington Post) and who “recalls the Americana delicacy of Alison Krauss but with a far spookier and more fanciful feel,” (Lexington Herald Leader) will release Man In A Neon Coat: Live From Cambridge September 9, on Yep Roc Records. The album is now available for pre-order. A limited edition CD will be available October 1, via the Yep Roc Records web store or at an upcoming show.

Recorded live at The Sinclair in Cambridge, MA, on April 13, 2016, the album features live trio performances of tracks from her highly acclaimed albums, In The Magic Hour and Fossils, as well as covers of Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris classics.

“I’ve been unbelievably lucky to be touring In The Magic Hour with Anthony Da Costa and Steve Nistor,” notes Aoife. “They are two of the most talented musicians I’ve ever worked with, and recreating the songs from the studio sessions with such a stripped-down lineup was a super fun challenge. After a few months of touring, we decided that we needed to make a live album. The duet singing, the bass-free ensemble, the creativity of the drum sounds—it needed to be documented. We called in engineer extraordinaire Dave Sinko and he flew up to The Sinclair in Cambridge for a whirlwind night of music making to a packed house. We can’t wait to release these sounds into the world.”

Named as “a must-see act” at this year’s Newport Folk Festival by Rolling Stone, O’Donovan continues her relentless touring and will embark on a 16-city fall tour with Willie Watson on October 13. A full list of tour dates is below.

Since the release earlier this year of her sophomore album, In The Magic Hour, the conservatory-trained singer and songwriter has garnered accolades for her album written in the wake of her grandfather’s death and as an ode to her idyllic childhood summers surrounded by family.

Produced by Tucker Martine, the album includes special guest appearances by Chris Thile, Sara Watkins, Sarah Jarosz and Gabriel Kahane, among others, and is the follow-up to her highly regarded 2013 solo debut Fossils.
