The Subaru of America-sponsored “A Walk in the Park with David Vassar” was first presented to a sold-out audience and resounding accolades at the 2016 Environmental Film Festival at the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History, in Washington, DC, this past March.

“A Walk in the Park with David Vassar” is an epic life-long film retrospective through America’s magnificent Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone and Death Valley National Parks, among others, highlighted with personal stories from Vassar’s lifetime of environmental filmmaking. Scenes from Vassar’s Academy Award-nominated documentary, Generation on the Wind, and the PBS special featuring California State Parks, California Forever, are also included in the program. In addition, Vassar will present selected scenes from Backcountry Pictures’ current production, Conspiracy of Extremes, co-produced with Sally Kaplan, which advocates for desert protection and features Death Valley and Joshua Tree National Parks, the Mojave National Preserve and others.

At the age of 19, while still in college, David made his first film in Yosemite. It was the beginning of a journey that continues to this day; one that would take him to some of the nation’s most magnificent National Parks where he has written, directed and produced more than a dozen films. These films have featured celebrities such as actor Harrison Ford, legendary newsman Roger Mudd, and iconic musician Paul Winter. Vassar’s work continues to reach millions of people in theaters, cable and broadcast television, international film festivals and National Park Visitor Centers. The central message of each film remains the same; to strengthen the bond between people and nature, inspiring them to become advocates for conservation. Vassar’s vast body of work also includes productions for ABC, NBC, CBS, BBC, Fox, History, Discovery, and Animal Planet.

Jeffrey Stine, Curator for Environmental History, National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, states, "David Vassar is a masterful storyteller whose filmmaking gifts are never more evident than when he portrays the breathtaking lands encompassed by America’s National Parks.”

Concertgoers will be admitted starting at 7:00pm - please carpool! - the show starts at about 8:00pm.  Admission is $10 for children under 12. My sister is also a singer. She sings pop, R & B and country. but she didn't feel music was her direction.

He was the one to pursue his musical career. His mother signed him up for piano lessons when he was 5. At 6 years old his mother signed him up for dance. Also at that same time his uncle had an Alto saxophone that he use to play in school. He gave it to Beeken because Beeken was so fascinated by it. He loved the way it sound and how it looked. From that point on his musical journey took off. His father quickly signed him up for private lessons. From 6-13 years old he took lesson from The Late Great Matt Shoun. A famous Jazz composer and saxophonist in the San Francisco/Bay Area. Beeken's musical skills was ahead of everyone in his band class and other music classes.

In 4th grade he was the 1st to do a solo with a piano accompinist for his 1st band concert. The song he chose was Pink Panther. It was a difficult piece. Beeken got a standing ovation.
