Calaveras County CAO Bob Lawton Talks County Budget at CCTA luncheon (Updated Video Link)
Angels Camp, CA...Greenhorn Creek played host for another meeting yesterday as Calaveras County CAO Bob Lawton Keynoted the Calaveras County Taxpayers Association luncheon. CAO Lawton talked about Calaveras County's budget process and that the county has a very lean budget this year and the county was very conservative on its budget estimates. They will be watching the state to see how the funding scenario shapes up but the county has already made the hard choices for this year's budget cycle. He also broke down the budgeting process....
Some of the interesting facts were: Only 18% of your property tax dollars actually stay in the county, Counties by and large have to "Pay this year's Bills with this year's money" and do not have the additional borrowing powers of the state. He praised the post Prop 13 budgeting process as better than some of the alternatives and much more.
Mr. Lawton conveyed that while the county has made hard choices and is in pretty good shape this year if further cuts are required next year then those cuts will most likely start affecting the service levels the county provides.
