Central Sierra/Hwy 4 Fishing Report for September 29, 2008~By Bill Reynolds of Ebbetts Pass Sporting Goods
Deer season is now underway. D-6 Opened last weekend and D-5 Opened this past weekend. Lake Alpine has been dropping steadily this past week. You can launch a small aluminum boat, kayak or canoe, but it would be difficult if not impossible to launch a larger boat. Fishing has been excellent this past week due to cooler weather and a recent trout plant.....
Trollers should try Apex, Needlefish, and Rapala's behind a small dodger tipped with a nightcrawler or try a flasher/nightcrawler combo, you should be fishing at slow speed. Fly fishermen have had success using midge flies, woolly buggers, nymphs, and sparrow nymphs. Bank fishermen should try inflated nightcrawlers, Gulp Power Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Nightcrawlers, floating Power Eggs, and salmon eggs. Lure casters should try Kastmasters, Panther Martin spinners, and Rooster Tails.
Spicer Lake has dropped and the ramp is out of the water along with the dock. In order to launch you will need a 4-wheel drive and a smaller boat. Trollers should try Apex, Needlefish, Assassin, and Wedding Ring's behind a small dodger tipped with a nightcrawler or try a flasher/nightcrawler combo. Bank fishermen have had success using Gulp Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, nightcrawlers, and floating Power Eggs. Fly fishermen should try midge flies, flying ants, hoppers, stimulators, woolly buggers, blue wing olive, and adams flies in the late evening by the dam. Lure casters have had success using Rapala's, Rooster Tails, and Panther Martin spinners.
The North Fork of the Stanislaus has been tough due to lack of plants . Baitcasters will probably have the best luck split-shotting salmon eggs, floating Power Eggs, Crickets, or inflated worms with a 15 to 20 inch leader. Fly casters have had the most success. Fly fishermen should try bead head nymphs, bead head woolly buggers with a sink tip line, blue wing olive, hoppers, adams, and humpys. Lure casters can try Panther Martin spinners, Rooster Tails, Rapala's, and Kastmasters.
White Pines Lake, located in Arnold has been tough due to receding water. It is a rumor they are dropping the lake so they can dredge it this year. This will help our future fishery. We have needed to get the silt and excess growth out of this lake for sometime.
Beaver Creek, located in Big Trees State Park is still a great place for fly fishermen to go and test their skills.
We are now in the heart of our fire season. Please contact our local Fire Stations for all of the current restrictions before heading to the Sierra.
Camping is available at Big Trees State Park and Golden Pines just beyond the park on Highway 4. Campgrounds in the Stanislaus National Forest are all officially open.
