Supervisors Approve Watered Down Valley Springs Sign Proposal ~By John Hamilton Updated with over 2 hours of Video
San Andreas, CA...A Significantly watered down sign proposal was passed by the Calaveras County Board of Supervisors earlier this afternoon. Rogers Media had originally proposed three illuminated 128 square ft. Billboards along Hwy 12 in the Valley Springs area. The proposed property is zoned M-2 and is zoned for the project. Today's vote was on an appeal of an earlier Planning Commission denial of the signs. What was passed by the board was to allow one sign without illumination and have the permit to have the sign on the property expire after 5 years...

Rogers Media voluntarily dropped their proposal down to one sign in hopes of getting a clean decision today. This decision today will probably spur litigation by Rogers Media against the county. Their position is that an approval in this manner will not allow the project to be profitable as the time allowed for the signs would not provide an adequate return on investment.
Supervisor Claudino removed his reservations on the project after it was dropped back to one sign. Supervisors Tryon & Callaway wanted to see the square footage be limited to 64 square feet on each side of a double facing sign and limiting the time span for the approval to 3 years. Supervisor Thomas was in favor of a 10 approval term for the sign. Supervisor Chair Wilensky and Supervisor Tryon wanted to go into closed session to discuss this item as litigation is a very real possibility.
Many in the community would like to see heavy limits put on Billboard advertising in the County. This will no doubt be one of the issues addressed in our now being revised general plan.
There was lengthy discussion today on this topic. In fact discussion this topix alone consumed almost two hours of meeting time today. Representatives from MyValleySprings.com, The Valley Springs Business Association. and others voiced their concerns on the project today.
Those voicing their support were in the majority today. Representatives of Rogers Media. The property owners & numerous members of the community including several members of the Calaveras County Taxpayers Alliance spent a great deal of time expressing their support for the project.
