New Melones Lake Was Packed This Weekend ~By Hanna Alldrin
Angels Camp, CA....Boaters flooded New Melones Lake this Labor Day Holiday weekend. On Sunday alone there were reports of over 213 boats launched into the lake from the Glory Hole boat ramp. The Tuttletown launch was not reported, but rangers suspect over 400 boats launched into the warm water this afternoon. At 6pm this evening there were over 30 boats trying to dock at the same time, the boat launch was so busy that they had two rangers directing traffic.......
Boaters had to wait approximately 30 minutes to launch or dock their boat at the Glory Hole boat ramp. With water levels being at a record low, there were only two boat ramps open during the holiday weekend making ramps extra crowded.
"I have never ever seen it like this before," shared Kristin Vieira. "It has been very busy this weekend," shared park ranger, Taylor Vogel.
Labor Day Weekend is one of the most busiest weekends of the year for camping and boating enthusiasts at Melones.
With decreasing water levels and increasing boating crowds, boaters should be on the lookout for such obstructions as trees, debris and land areas that normally are well under the water’s surface.
There was one traffic accident reported at the Tuttletown boat ramp. "We only reported a small fender bender," shared park ranger, Phillip Le Gault. As of 7pm this evening there were no reports of injuries or deaths on the water.
Park officials suspect another busy day at the lake tomorrow and encourage people to not drink and drive and keep our waterways safe.
