66 years old and probably took drugs and smoked weed his entire life. What a shame, this wake up call will be the last one!

Blame Calaveras County for allowing marijuana to be grown here. RIP to the victim and prayers to his loved ones. So very sad.

Yes county government, you should be ashamed. Pot, meth both lead to very troubled lives for so many. Thievery and violence, yeah growing pot here is just great-------------so sad!

Four above comments all from same IP address pretending as if there is some sort of dialogue going on between multiple mentally disturbed individuals...nope, just one crazy old bat trying to make herself feel/seem important.

Let the comments begin about the evils of marijuana. But it was already here and being grown. Underground, illegal grows and violence are a result of a community not having a licensed, legal, tax revenue-collecting program in place. Oh, yes - there will be more like this from the illegals that have now moved in.

I'm 6th generation Calaveras and the Pot being grown was hidden, not able to ever be seen from any road, or addresses looked up. Much of it under tree canopy edges by small growers. There was not all this crime over Pot because many rural, living out of town off the grid old hippies had small patches and sold it pretty cheap. Nothing to murder over.

Alcohol kills many many more, it definitely should be banned.
          Opiates too.

Marijuana absolutely had something to do with this murder. Folks get protective and irrational when growing. What's with the gun possession? The State of California won't even allow someone with a medical marijuana card to own a gun. How is it that these knuckleheads saw fit to have guns?

Not true at all. More than a few old time families have lost a member or two in past years. Not about to name names and revisit that kind of heartache but part of Calaveras' history for decades. And for the record - by the time the BOS got around to allowing some legal cultivation (well into 2019), most of the responsible owners sold their land and moved on. They simply couldn't afford to hang on for the long debate and had to earn a living elsewhere.

You are speaking about the illegal grows that are popping up everywhere now and depleting the SO's budget. More than a few local boys got caught in bad deals back in the day.

Stop with the smoke and mirrors. The front of Asians, Mexicans or other illegals on these pot grows is done by mafia type crime right here in America. It is CA. and valley gangs, most likely motorcycle gangs too that are hiring these front illegals to grow this pot here.

One idiot " legal" grower got beaten to a pulp w/a baseball bat in a deal gone wrong. None of the "permitted" growers can make a living selling cannabis unless they also sell illegally. It's just the way it is in California when the State decided to pass laws created solely for the mega-growers who have huge holdings and facilities in SoCal. None of these laws were written for even the mid-size operations. Small growers? They are out of the loop.

Baloney. Our own Sheriff stated that when commercial cannabis is permitted and allowed, we have more illegal growing here. With illegal growing comes crime, safety issues, and environmental releases.

When pretty much the whole Sheriff's Dept. and CHP were speeding down 49 towards Mokelumne Hill around 10 PM, I pulled up the scanner. Heard 90 yr. old man with gunshot to the head, no response but they had a pulse. Medical helicopter was landed at the Mokelumne Hill Ball Park.

Don't know any more than that and there is nothing saying this being told to the public. I don't know why when you could easily hear it on the scanner?

The BOS members who allowed commercial pot growing here should be held accountable since our own Sheriff stats show that we have more illegal growing (and polluting and life safety crimes) when commercial pot growing is allowed. Callaway, Stopper, and Garamendi caused this to happen.
