Calaveras Amateur Radio Society Annual Field Day in Bear Valley This Weekend!
Bear Valley, CA....Again, this year the /Calaveras Amateur Radio Society (CARS)/ will set up radio equipment and antennas in the Mt. Reba parking lot in Bear Valley, and will be operating from early Saturday morning to late Sunday morning around the clock using battery backup, and emergency power only. CARS members will be setting up and operating up to 10 Amateur radio stations, which will be operating in several modes such as Voice, Morse Code, ....
PSK31, PSK61, Packet, and other digital modes using battery backup and solar power only...just follow the signs after the Bear Valley Lodge to Hiway 207 and continue to follow the signs.
The best times to visit will be from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm both days....we will be operating almost continuously for the 24-hour period. However, once the sun sets on Saturday night it will be difficult for visitors to see what is going on due to extreme darkness. However, we will accommodate any visitor who wishes to visit operations during the"dark hours".
Thousands of "Ham Radio" operators will be showing off their emergency capabilities over this June weekend. During the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications in emergencies, such as the California wildfires, Oregon and Michigan storms, tornadoes, and other events world-wide. /When trouble is brewing, ham radio operators are often the first to provide critical information and communications.//
This annual event, called "Field Day", using only emergency power supplies, ham operators will construct emergency stations in parks, shopping malls, schools, parking lots, and back yards around the country. Their slogan, "Ham radio works when other systems don't ", is more than just words to the hams, as they prove they can send messages in many forms /without the use of phone systems, internet, or any other infrastructure that can be compromised in a crisis/. More than 34,000 amateur radio operators across the country participated in last year's Field Day 2007 event.
There are 650,000 Amateur Radio licensees in the US, and more than 2.5 million around the world. Through the ARRL’s ARES program, ham volunteers provide emergency communications for thousands of state and local emergency response agencies, all for free.
The public is most cordially invited to visit the CARS site in Bear Valley, and talk with your local hams. They can even help you get on the air!
