In a Post Trump World Could Libertarians Actually Win? ~ John Hamilton

Arnold, CA...After a week where watching the news from Washington made Americans physically ill it made me wonder what could actually be the next and safest path to unite the most Americans in a post Trump world? According to many statistics if old school liberal Democrats, Libertarian leaning Republicans and actual Libertarians ever actually joined forces it would easily make the largest voting block in the nation.

It could form a coalition where principles over politics could actually win elections. Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness could just be the platform. The ultimate big tent coalition.

The Liberal Democrats, Libertarian Republicans and actual Libertarians may not always like each other and at times approach public policy from different angles but actual governing principles could be remarkedly consistent.

Americans could relax and get on with their lives and not feel like they have to fret and worry about the impact Washington was going to have on their lives.

Focus on the core principles that 80 or 90 percent of Americans all agree on and ignore the rest. The 80/20 rule in public policy.

Life, Liberty & Pursuit of Happiness!

Doesn't it have a nice ring to it? Familiar but somehow new again?

Right now we have a deeply divided country that I believe has been deliberately divided so that each party could try and conquer. We have to find a way for the majority of Americans to see that we still all agree on core principles.

We can and we should negotiate and bargain on things such as size of social safety net, health care, taxes, etc.

We can do that and still feel comfortable that we are not enemies on the bulk of our beliefs

Biden was elected president based on the voting rules in place at the time. He deserves to be and was elected our 46th President.

Arguing about voting rules is just a way of saying you didn't make an overwhelming case that your ideas were better.

It was the big tent you are speaking of that got Biden elected. The Democratic Party contained the Lincoln project and AOC in this last election.

Maintaining democracy against trump made many people one-issue voters.

Like your editorial the other day about the hyper-value of local news, this is editorial is pure reactionary romanticism -- "if only we could go back to the good old days" when most people lived on farms and small communities, when blacks were slaves, native americans kept to their reservations, alcohol was prohibited, and the Protestant church was the center of the village. No thanks.

No, I don't believe in the old days were Pollyanna view of the world. We just have to find a way for Americans to come together in a 80/20 way on core Bill of Rights type of issues and agree to disagree and haggle on the rest of the 20% regardless of party label.

If history teaches us anything it is that governing based on looking for the "Right Leader" leads to tyranny.

Governing based on shared principles is the only safe route. In a Democratic Republic it isn't so much as the winner gets to make the rules as the basic rights of the losers are protected.

With all due respect, your post displays a lack of understanding in regards to what the Libertarian party stands for. We don't believe in infringing on the individual's property (slavery being the height of infringement in this regard), nor dictating what anyone should, or should not, do with their body (provided there's no victim involved).

In an America so utterly bogged down in the pedantics of personal lives and responding to personal insults, a return to discussing ideas in a respectful fashion is just what's needed.

Exactly why Biden won as a centrist, and likely the only democrat that could have done so at this point in time. I believe what we will see instead is a split in the GOP party with McConnell, Murkoski, Romney and more on one side and the fringe element or party of Trump on the other.

    John's Absurdity

The Libertarians are anti regulation of anything.
No EPA,FDA, CDC, CPSC public schools, a meager police force, the list is endless.
To even think that an alliance between those who don't give a shyte about public health and welfare and the Democratic party , which is the opposite of libertarianism is absurd.

Obviously we need a strong government not what we jaut had- a prime example of what happens- a global epidemic denied and attempts made to maximize profits with not a care for the hundreds of thousands dead.

This is an example of the libertarian world, we just lived it.

John get a grip, get informed, throw away whatever you believe and start with examining facts, truth, history.

The main problem in America currently is Fox, Limbaugh, and those who peddle BS have soaked a lot of noggins with complete bullony- bullshyte.

Name any conservative, libertarian policy that has truthfully worked. There are none.
    Name them.

Until Americans return to a society that can disagree with opposing views, yet showing the opposition some respect, it won't matter if we're bipartisan or a third partthird-party alternative.
    It's all about respect.
American society no longer shows that those that oppose can work together.
Trump's first 2 years attempted to get bipartisan bills to his desk.
In his last 2 years, he didn't care what came to him as long his met his narrow ideals.
We must come together as Americans to fight this divisive mentality.

Love reading all the comments. Europeans, White Americans, murderers of the Native American People who lived here before them. Women, children, it didn't matter. Rape the women, children, the murder them. Kill as many of God's creatures as they could for the hide and waste the rest. Genocide in America, Land Of The Free, unless you weren't White. The breakers of hundreds of treaties, the best liars in the World, and now they fight amongst themselves, which party is better? Doesn't matter what country the white people have lived in, genocide follows where ever you have been, where ever you go. Deep down, you haven't changed, it's all still there under the surface. You've just proved it be storming your capitol. You've proved it all last year looting and burning people's dreams, their lively hood. So tell everyone again, which party is so good for you humble, peace loving, honest people? I'd love to read all about it, I enjoy reading Fiction.
