Columbia College Plans Bus Trips This Summer

Columbia, CA....Through its Community Education Program, Columbia College will offer several interesting and varied bus excursions this summer that will save you from the rising cost of gasoline, fatigue from driving, and making travel arrangements. As we approach $4 a gallon, let’s repeat save on gas......

Bus trips include an exhibit of Impressionist women’s art and a Dead Sea Scrolls display, tour of a restored U.S. Nike missile site, and lunch aboard a wooden paddle wheeler in Old Town Sacramento. A comfortable tour bus leaves from the Junction Shopping Center in Sonora at 8:00 a.m. and will return by 7:00 p.m. for all three trips. Palace of the Legion of Honor will be the destination for the day trip on Wednesday, June 25. On exhibit will be the works of four noted women Impressionists: Mary Cassatt, Eva Gonzales, Marie Bracquemond, and Berthe Morisot. Also on display at the museum will be the Dead Sea Scrolls and 5,000 Years of Treasures from the Israel Antiquities Authority. The $45 fee includes bus transportation and museum entrance. Registration deadline is May 28.

On Thursday, July 17, a tour of the restored U.S. Nike missile site SF-88 is scheduled, plus a stop in Sausalito for lunch and browsing among the many shops located there. The missile site was one of 280 firing batteries in operation from 1953 to 1979 during the Cold War. Located in the Marin headlands, the site is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Trip cost of $30 covers bus transportation and the tour. Registration deadline is July 1.

A day in Old Town Sacramento and a lunch cruise on a wooden paddle wheeler on the Sacramento River is set for Friday, Aug. 15. Free time will be available after the cruise to visit other Old Town attractions, including the Sacramento Railroad Museum.

The $55 trip fee covers bus transportation, river cruise and lunch. Registration deadline is July 23.

Other destinations for bus trips, which are scheduled for the fall, include the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose on Sept. 24, Autumn in Yosemite on Oct. 15, De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park on Nov. 5, Governor’s Mansion and Towe Auto Museum in Sacramento on Dec. 3, and Nutcracker ballet at the San Francisco Opera House in December. Registration for fall trips begins on Aug. 5.

Interested persons can register by mail, by fax, online at www.gocolumbia.org/CommunityEducation. In-person registrations will be accepted at the campus Admissions and Records Office in Sonora (588-5231), or at the Calaveras Center (736-5940) in Angels Camp near the Frogtown Fairgrounds.

Registration forms are available in the Columbia College summer class schedule or may be downloaded from the college website. Additional information is also available Monday through Thursday from the Community Education Office at 588-5144.
