Seventeen New Cases of COVID-19 Reported in Calaveras County Including First Case in a Local Nursing Home Resident

San Andreas, CA...On Friday, July 31, 2020 Calaveras Public Health reported 17 new cases of COVID-19 in Calaveras County. This is largest increase reported in a single reporting period. The additional cases include four females and four males between 18 to 49 years of age, one male between 50-64 years of age, four females and two males over the age of 65, and two cases are currently being determined. Six cases were reported in District 1, Districts 2 and 4 had two reported cases each, District 3 had one case, and District 5 had four cases. The place of residence is still being determined for two cases.

One of the newly reported cases was confirmed in an elderly female resident of Avalon Health Care San Andreas. Investigations are underway jointly between Calaveras Public Health epidemiology staff and Avalon infection control representatives to determine the source of the infection, and whether other residents or staff may be infected. Strict infection prevention activities remain in effect in the facility. According to Avalon administration, this appears to be an isolated case and no spread of the virus to other residents appears to have occurred.

“The rate of new COVID-19 cases in Calaveras County continues to accelerate. Outbreaks in nursing homes can be devastating to the high risk residents who live there. We need everyone to help us protect Calaveras from COVID-19 as we wait for new treatments and a vaccine. The best way to do that is to ensure that local businesses and our community work together to keep each other healthy - wear a face covering, get tested, wash your hands often, stay home if you are sick, and practice physical distancing,” said Dr. Dean Kelaita, Calaveras County Health Officer. “When individuals gather with people outside of their household, it places the community at risk of COVID-19 spread, especially when preventive actions aren’t followed,” said Dr. Kelaita.

To date, Calaveras Public Health has reported 125 confirmed cases of COVID-19. Of those cases, 96 cases have since recovered while 28 cases remain active. There has been one reported death related to COVID-19 in Calaveras County.

The best ways to avoid exposure to the virus are to:
 Stay home as much as you can
 Stay at least 6 feet away from people outside of your household
 Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands
 Wear a face covering over your nose and mouth when around others

Calaveras Public Health staff continues to investigate new cases to determine any possible persons who may have had close personal contact with the positive individuals. Close contacts may be contacted by the health department, assessed and monitored for signs and symptoms of COVID-19 illness.

Symptoms can appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19:
 Fever or chills
 Cough
 Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
 Fatigue
 Muscle or body aches
 Headache
 New loss of taste or smell
 Sore throat
 Congestion or runny nose
 Nausea or vomiting
 Diarrhea

Look for emergency warning signs for COVID-19. If someone is showing signs, seek emergency care immediately:
 Trouble breathing
 New confusion or weakness
 Bluish lips or face
 Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
 Inability to wake or stay awake

No-cost testing for COVID-19 is available to anyone who would like to get tested. The OptumServe COVID-19 testing site located at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds is open Tuesday-Saturday from 7:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M. Testing is now available to those age 3 and older. People are highly encouraged to register online. People without Internet access should call (888) 634-1123.

As of Tuesday, July 28th, Calaveras Public Health began providing the number of COVID-19 tests reported in the last 14 days rather than the total number of tests conducted to-date. This move aligns with the county data monitoring system put into action by the California Department of Public Health. Monitoring COVID-19 closely in Calaveras County will help keep the public informed and ready if restrictions are needed to slow the spread of COVID-19. To receive information and resources related to COVID-19 visit the Calaveras County COVID-19 website.

Once Trump is re-elected in November, this pandemic will immediately go away. Now the unimportant bonus has expired, our economy will rebound like no tomorrow. Just watch and see. We all know the answer, just admit it. More so what party caused this nonsense. Hang in there and honest voters will do you a favor!

It will be interesting to see the covid numbers in Florida a week from now due to the storm coming in.
SIP vs evacuation vs shutting down businesses due to possible hurricane conditions.
The coming months will be interesting for the data gatherers.
The anti maskers and anti vaxers will have plenty of info that either supports or refutes their beliefs.
As for me, SIP and wearing a mask in public makes the most sense.

Hey, those we still here shopkeepers in Murphys you don't believe in masks - hope you're paying attention to the age group with the most cases. Also, that one downtown winery whose owners say it's all about people having underlying conditions or are elderly - shame on you for being so callous about the health of others!

Having a little trouble understanding your beginning but autocorrect gets me sometimes, too. But agreed, there are those still visiting downtown Murphys shops declaring they don't believe in masks. Yet I know of at least one who hasn't returned to work because she doesn't want to bring home the virus to her young son. So, which is it or are you just covering all the bases? Unconscionable that a business owner would openly disobey public health policy and guessing he or she is not exactly an outstanding member of the business association.

^Sorry, youre freaking wrong. Trump did cause the vast majority of problems. He ignored it, tweeted that fact, suppressed a national response, blew it off. Its his fault, at least 85% of the deaths are his fault. All you have to do is look around the world and see countries that attacked this virus as a country, have pretty much conquered it. South Korea, Vietnam for two. Not us though. Thanks to Teerump we are fuked.

The virus isn’t political , it infects anyone. Trump is political. He lied the whole time. Downplayed it. Assigned Jared to a team to figure a national defense. Jared and team of experts came up with a plan to to stop this spread. Trump discovered that the worst infection happened in the blue states (most populated) . The plan to stop the spread was cancelled, it just disappeared. The word was that that the administration didn’t want to help the blue states. Trump then made it a policy that states had to deal with it themselves. It wasn’t his job. The plan to save the nation was sacrificed to harm the
blue states. So here we are, trump is playing with death, and the destruction of the economy.

It has more to do with the dump's stupidity and lack of ability to understand, let alone, respect science.

#dirtydon likely barely understands the tenets of epidemiology, and for sure dislikes it because the answers it points to highlight his ineptitude.

If you look at it, it says 2 cases are "unknown" so they were not assigned to a district. It adds up if you include those. The press release explains it further:
"The place of residence is still being determined for two cases."

It was inevitable. Way too many ignorant people. And way too many people visiting here for whatever reason. Savemart and Angels hardware are full of non full time residents. Done with both of them and they raised prices because of it. No wonder people shop out of town. Costco and Lowes are actually cheaper. Way to go! Let's bail on your community. Do some research...they must have to up there prices.

Too many Californians at home and no airplanes on which to travel or countries we're allowed in. Still, many of those traveling up Route 4 are heading to their own second vacation homes and hardly out and about as you see many locals doing. Maybe a stop at the grocery store for a steak and beer first.

People out and about, on the streets, at the restaurants, shopping in the stores... crowded with people who are not full-time residents... and that includes the second-homeowners, too. You can thank Green Horn and the golf course developers in Copper for most of this. You can thank the pioneer families for setting down stakes here otherwise this would be either over run by developers or just like hwy 49 past Don Pedro. Desolate for miles. Learn your history.

Let us not forget the Taco Tues jount in Arnold, the hotel in Murphys, the drunken partiers at Melones. There are plenty of "new faces" around and plenty of the don't wear masks. They look at the stats in the BA papers and figure that it's safer up here with no thought that they may be bringing the virus with them to a county with 6 ICU beds and 3 ventilators.

Basically this is saying that 16 recovered since a few days ago and 17 more tested positive. since March, only 124 cases and 96 recovered is a pretty good number considering this is a "really" bad pandemic. I think influenza or "covid" (which I'm pretty positive hit us last winter) can be pretty deadly itself was half the county and spread like wildfire amongst all the kids. If you notice almost all democratic states show total cases and deaths but "do not" give the recovered which has been requested several times to be released by the governor and we yet to have those numbers.

Reading the comments here does not give me any hope that we can stop this virus. The deadly viral misinformation moves faster than the virus.

I agree. Not only do we have a novel virus to fight, but we have to deal with extreme ignorance, as well. The problem with that, of course, is that stupid people can make us sick. Literally.

Pretty simple, don't support their business.
They will either have to adapt, accept, or watch the consequences of their actions/inactions.

It's not just the businesses. It's people, in general, who don't behave in a responsible, adult way. People who think the guidelines don't apply to them. Locals, as well as visitors, who refuse to wear a face covering when they go into the post office, or grocery store.

I work in Jackson. We have a sign up telling customers to wear masks. People look at it and completely ignore it. All weekend long people come in with their boats and jet skis. People who live here, people from Sacramento, people from out of state. The amount of stress we are under to ensure your safety only to be met with absolute disrespect. I’m sick of it and I’m about to lose it on you people.

I completely sympathize. It's repulsive. Store owners and their employees should not have to deal with this. I am all for a No Mask/No Entry policy. If customers refuse, they can shop elsewhere, where the business doesn't care about people's health. But if every single business had the same strict policy, people would have to adapt. They should not be given a choice, at this point. It's not a game, or a joke.

The problem with this is that enforcement is the responsibility of the workers.

That's what I'm saying. It should not have to be their responsibility. That's not fair. This is where the county needs to step up, and back up these businesses by enforcing the mandate. It's done in other counties.

Should be enforced by the Sheriff and police. They say they won’t enforce the ,ask rule. Well hell, it wasn’t too many years ago they would be all over your ass if you were were a smoking some MJ. This virus is a lot more serious, and police failure to give a few citations for no mask is a rank failure to do their job.

What it's going to take is employees sueing their employees for a safe workplace. Employers who put up signs requiring customers wear masks but don't enforce it are playing chickenpoop with their employees. Employers must have a person on the premises specifically designated to enforce mask requirements.

Trump works hard and has done a fantastic job controlling this coronavirus. If it were not for him and his great leadership the number of infections and deaths would be far greater. He deserves his days on the golf course and the gratitude of every American.

Tracking coronavirus in Calaveras County
By Los Angeles Times Staff

Updated Aug. 2, 3:32 p.m. Pacific
125 confirmed cases. Nothing reported on Sunday. 1 death Nothing reported on Sunday...

I can hardly wait to see what the next two weeks bring..

One metric is whether counties have kept the number of new cases reported over the last 14 days to less than 100 per 100,000 residents. Calaveras County currently passes that test. Over the last two weeks, officials have confirmed 38 new cases, which amounts to 84 per 100,000. Does that count the San Andreas Nursing home where under 10 COVID cases do not need to be reported. Wow. With little testing going on in long-term care facilities how do we know the facilities are accurately reporting information on outbreaks? Just add this to what the health experts tell us, that the true number of people infected is unknown and likely much higher than official tallies. Bet Calaveras residents can hardly wait to see what pops up on Tues when the Health Department wakes up to a brand new week. Sixteen to go folks, with exactly eight available ICU beds.

It comes to mind...how many weeks ago did Dr. Bandaid say if the count kept rising..what was it he was going to implement? Someone, tell me again... Hello? Silence from his quarters? Oh....Trumplenecks are threatening the good doctor for telling them they must mask up? And social distance? That'll do it. STFU Doc. Cower. While the sheriff doses between the capture of errant farmers.

So buds, I wonder, do Calaveras business owners care who gets sick? Some maybe, but not all? Those would rather be shut down again than stick up for no masks, no service? Really? C'mon, they are that stupid? I get it some might not care if customers infect other customers. But....but a bunch of sick people with serious breathing issues don't go out and buy stuff, get nails done, pets shaved, drink wine, or eat--which means their businesses will lose customers. I guess along with no cure for the virus, there's no cure for dumb. Walmart across the river is whining about confrontation of idiotic and sometimes abusive customers not wearing masks. How's it working out for folks in Calaveras?. Not too good, eh? Number of cases are climbing. A few more and the Gov will say shut down. What a train wreck; synapses misfiring all over the place.

Health pandemic going on guys and dolls. Get over the fact you can't see it. It's here and not leaving. You may be asymptomatic (about 80% of COVID 19 cases are) and breathing it on your family and friends. You may be fine but they get sick. It's up to the Supervisors, the Department of Health, and the sheriff to cull the idiots and turn this around.

Too dumb to put on a mask,
And do what health experts ask?
Then total lock down will do it.
So the rest of us get through it.
