RENAME JULY 4th ~ Letter to the Editor by Robert G. Reagan

Murphys, CA...They should rename July 4th and call it Interdependence Day because too many people think they can do whatever they want on Independence Day with little regard for the health of their families and fellow citizens. On this July 4th a group of flag waving “patriots” marched down Main St. in Murphys, with not a face mask in sight.

Those of us who served in the military during wartime did not do so to give people the right to flaunt laws and rules designed to slow the spread of a deadly virus.
There are signs posted throughout the town extoling people to “Keep Murphys Open” by following simple rules like wearing a mask and practicing distancing. Most merchants are requiring shoppers to abide by these rules because they care about their customers and staff.

The sheriff has made it clear that he will not enforce the governor’s mandate. Fie on Rick DiBasilio. Murphys is a special place because of the number of people who care about each other and our thousands of visitors. It is a shame that this attitude is not more contagious.

Sgt. Robert G. Reagan, US Army, ret.
Murphys CA

Well that ain't cool! I can see being patriotic, but lets all heed by the guidelines like social distancing and wearing masks, etc. I heard that some churches are opening up now but with limitations like having more than one service breaking down into smaller groups. For this whole thing to work (dealing with the COVID and hoping it'll end soon) we all need to make some sacrifices. That's why I'm never going out anywhere this weekend and wait till this is over with. I made one trip away from the house yesterday. I just went down to the PO to check on my mail early Saturday morning since hardly anyone was out and about and it was just starting to get warm.
Then last night my roommates and I had a big feast at the house, invited a neighbors across the street and our next door neighbor and family-less than 10 people of course and we are all COVID 19 free and healthy! We also had fireworks (store bought) right on the street (narrow side street and very quiet) all lit in an old tub with water nearby. We are all sensible and responsible adults and had a lot of food (I myself overate lol!) and had a good time! Most of our next of kin are out of town and can't really afford to see them and vice versa. This how the poor folks celebrate and we don't claim any political parties either!

Yes, and some of those patriots marching in Murphys were business owners.
Setting an example for others, by wearing masks and social distancing, speak much louder than just proclaiming how patriotic you are.
I hope the children of this county are smarter than some of the adults.

I want to thank Brian for sacrificing his annual 4th of July show for the good of the community. He has been beaten enough. Brian does a ton of good things for the community. We all need to be together to beat the virus. Now, there are still a couple merchants on Main street who do not help with enforcing the mask regulation. It is time to boycott those merchants. They need to be part of the solution and not the problem.

What, exactly, has Brian done for the community? He still had the hotel full of people last night. No one was wearing a mask. Do you mean the harmful conspiracy theories he touts on his Facebook page? The ones that claim covid is a hoax, and that “magic masks” (his words) don’t work, and that he won’t make his customers wear one? Is that what you mean by helping our community?
Brian helps Brian. He doesn’t give a flying crap about anyone but himself.

Brian sacrificed his Fourth of July party??!! I’m sure Brian was advised by Marita and maybe some other officials who grow a pair of balls to close it down and they gave him the opportunity for it to come from him. Which was a disgraceful letter it was condescending and ridiculous. And did he really close anything down because it was a complete *bleep* show of tourist there with no mask. And Brian does what brand is for Brian. If it doesn’t benefit his pocketbook it doesn’t happen

Please somebody clarify? To those of us who did not choose to participate in the circus of Murphy’s for the Fourth of July… Did Brian march in the show and did anybody that was in the parade wear masks? Were they local merchants and business owners are who were they? And wear their mask presents or were there or not?

Keep living your slow deaths with the hate seeping out of your pores.

I feel sorry for each of you who can say these hateful remarks without knowing who I really am. It saddens me that my fellow Americans can have so much hate in their hearts!

I hope each of you who have I’ll feelings towards me and can’t muster up the courage to have an adult conversation will stay true to themselves with their hateful remarks, well after this virus has passed. Stay away from The Hotel today, tomorrow , next year, Forever I beg of you and not just you anyone who shares these same hateful thoughts and views .

Let me lay it all out for the people who just got here-
Brian of Murphys Hotel plans a giant, 4th of July party. He posts the notices, then follows of up with several covid denial Facebook posts, all of which state masks don’t work.
Murphys residents and fellow business owners attempt to reason with him to cancel the party. The party is a covid super spreader just waiting to happen. Brian continues to post covid denial statements, statements about how masks don’t work, and that he won’t wear one.
The party doesn’t happen, for some inexplicable reason, but the hotel is still full out guests in the outdoor seating area on the 4th, none wearing masks.
No one here is trolling you, Brian. Airing our concerns and anger at your lack of basic common sense isn’t trolling. Stating our anger at your apparent willingness to make us all collateral damage so you can pretend we’re not in the middle of a pandemic, is not trolling.
Part of living in a community is acting like a community member. Donating money to local causes does not make you an exemplary community member. Making hard choices that may not ultimately benefit you, but might save your neighbors and friends, is.

Thank you for telling it like it is. I read all those posts on Facebook, and you are absolutely correct. In announcing the cancelation, his first words were "After some push back and remarks that our celebration would kill people etc, etc, etc , I had to think about it a bit" - What was there to think about? "Let's see, do I make a *bleep*load of money, even if people get sick and die... or should I do the right thing, and cancel? Gee, that's a tough one. I need to think about it...."? In reality, we know he didn't cancel out of concern for the community. Too many people complained, and he had no choice. If he really cared about the community, that event would never have been planned in the first place. He's not fooling anyone.

After he left that snarky, immature announcement about canceling, he DELETED the whole post. What a sneaky way to let people think it was still happening, so there would be a crowd there, regardless. And I guess there was... a mask-less, irresponsible crowd. Let's hope no one there was contagious. I guess we'll find out.

And we won't forget that "magic mask" post, either. You can't spew irresponsible nonsense like that, and then pretend you care about the community. We aren't having it.

I don't even use single-use masks... but the others get washed after each use, in antibacterial soap. I alternate using them. I have four. Now, it would feel extremely weird to go into a place WITHOUT a mask. You get used to wearing them... just like how you get used to reaching for your seat belt as soon as you get in your car. It's automatic. Those people I encounter at the grocery store who DON'T wear a mask get the evil-eye from me. :)

As a vet it is so frustrating to see so many who truly don’t understand basic principles with 1st, 2nd Amendment rights etc. This country unfortunately has had a movement of people who deny science and experts and just gravitate to those who share their views regardless of a complete lack of credibility.

Make no mistake about it, when an elected official does not enforce rules set in place by higher ranking governing officials, they are engaging in criminal behavior themselves.

Don’t re-elect these officials, and don’t patronize businesses owners who deny science and medical facts at the expense of community health.
Brian Goss of Murphys Hotel and Russell Irish of Irish Family Vineyards are the most vocal anti-science, no mask supporters in Murphys. If you don’t believe me, go look at their personal Facebook pages.
If you support their businesses, you’re supporting their dangerous ideas.

This is covid's first year. The 19 is for the year it was discovered, 2019. 130,000 Americans have died in less than 6 months, and most of the country has not yet been exposed. Please take this seriously.

Thanks for taking the time, Robert. It would seem that many have lost the concept of "public health." So, guess a whole lot more of us will die in the next year or so until we reach some helpful percentage of herd immunity and have a vaccine. Because the deniers are not going to consider the data or science but only what the Twitter in Chief or their FOX News feed tells them. I overheard a Murphys wine owner say, "Well, those are people with underlying conditions or obese people." As if those lives don't matter as well. Someone also needs to tell him (and his wife, mask-less in their tasting room) that the demographics are changing. Lots of healthy, younger folks being infected now...

I’m guessing it was Russell Irish and his wife Jennifer.

Don’t pick on Russ. He’s just a dimwit running a bottom of the barrel winery. He can’t help himself.

He’s a dimwit with dangerous and destructive beliefs and a big f_ing mouth to match. He can believe whatever the hell he wants. He doesn’t get to put the rest of us in danger because of his selfish actions.

Believe in the USA

Looking at the comments I can only say there is no hope for us as a community or country. We need to allow each other to voice opinions in a moderate way. BUT.
I came to this country 30 years ago and was proud when I became a US citizen.
What I see now is worthy of a 3rd world country. People arguing about a health crisis. Freedom means taking care of the guy in the trench next to you. Your "freedom" is nothing if your brother dies. LETS LOVE AND RESPECT EACH OTHER.

So, WHAT businesses would those be? I don’t want to have to walk in and noticed their “no mask wearing” policy. I would rather you tell me right here so I can avoid them.

Definitely Murphys Hotel and Irish Family vineyards. They aren’t requiring them, refuse to wear them, and post endless no mask rants on their Facebook pages. Russell Irish is by far the worst. He’s not only a mask and covid conspiracy theorist, he’s also a big old Trump supporter and appears to be into white pride stuff. Go look at his Facebook. Its all there. It’s extra special.

White pride is basically code for a man with a poor self image and a laughably small penis.

          You aren't saying anything new.
WHAT businesses are you boycotting? This whole thread is about the Hotel and Irish, so we've got those 2. Then someone mentioned Lavender Ridge and Jane and Jeans?
          And?!?!?!

If you know of businesses who aren’t wearing masks or requiring them for their customers, post it here. I think people are mentioning the ones they’re certain of already. If you know more, please post it.
