Jeremy Costa Arrested & Being Held on Stalking, Trespassing & Other Charges

San Andreas, CA...On March 27, 2020 Governor Gavin Newsom signed an executive order authorizing the California Judicial Council to take emergency action in response to the Covid-19 Pandemic. On 04/13/20, due to an order by the State of California’s Judicial Council requiring all California Sheriff’s Offices throughout the state to establish a $0 bail for certain arrestees (https://www.gov.ca.gov/…/governor-newsom-issues-executive-…/) the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office was ordered to release Jeremy Vernon David Costa from the Calaveras County Adult Detention Center (jail) on the $0 bail order.

One week following his release, during the evening of 4/21/20 and into the morning of 4/22/20, Jeremy Costa was reported to be knocking on a homeowner’s door in San Andreas and refusing to leave. Costa was contacted by Sheriff’ Deputies, and escorted from the area. Approximately six hours later a resident again reported that Costa had returned and was once more causing a disturbance. On 4/22/20 at approx. 11:30 am Costa was re-arrested by Calaveras County Sheriff’s Deputies on California Street in San Andreas on the charges of stalking, trespassing, and probation violations. He was subsequently transported and booked into the Calaveras County Jail. Due to the Sheriff’s Office Detective’s request for a bail increase, the judge issued a no bail hold on Costa. This means Jeremy Costa will be held until his arraignment which is scheduled by 4/24/20. At his arraignment the court will decide on whether Jeremy Costa remains in custody or is released from jail.

Prior to the above arrest, the Angels Camp Police Department also recently arrested Jeremy Costa for stalking. However, there was no bail enhancement requested and Costa was released on the State’s $0 bail requirement.

As noted in various other media releases from throughout the State of California the $0 bail decision has led to a variety of problems throughout the state. The Sheriff, Rick DiBasilio, is dismayed and does not support the decision made by the Judicial Council. The decision was not only detrimental to the justice system, it unnecessarily places both crime victims and witnesses into difficult and potentially dangerous situations. Sheriff DiBasilio is working with the other Sheriffs in California and the California State Sheriff’s Association to address the problems associated with the Judicial Council’s decision.

The Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office and Angels Camp Police Department are working with the Calaveras County District Attorney’s Office to address the collective criminal cases involving Jeremy Costa.
