Mark Twain Medical Center Provides Retreat Room for Staff in Stressful Times

San Andreas, CA – April 15, 2020 – A special retreat room has been created at Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) to help lift the burden of stress experienced by staff during the COVID-19 pandemic. “A handful of our team members created a place for staff to rest, relax and recharge during this difficult time,” says Doug Archer, MTMC President and CEO. “Our Organization believes very strongly in the value of self-care. Everyone needs an outlet to connect within and/or with others; whether that is self-reflection, spirituality, faith in God and prayer, exercise, catching up with a friend or family member, and even just the enjoyment of a good book. This Respite Retreat makes that possible.”

The room was furnished with existing resources from around the hospital campus. This retreat area is available 24 hours every day to provide a quiet place for staff to rest, enjoy a cup of coffee, connect with friends and family via phone and internet, or share thoughts with other team members also seeking a break.

There are cots located in the back part of the respite room, separated by privacy dividers for a quick recharge nap, or for a staff member to stretch out on. In the main part of the room there are tables and chairs for individuals to unwind, electronic power stations and charging centers for hooking up personal communication devices. Books, note pads, game books and magazines are available for staff to enjoy in the room or keep for a later time.

Archer explains, “We know everyone on our team – and throughout our community – are feeling the effects of this unprecedented COVID–19 situation. Health Care Providers, First Responders, clergy, and the men and women working to meet essential needs across the county are under tremendous pressure right now.”

“This Respite Retreat is one way we care for the caregivers here at MTMC. For the past several weeks we’ve also eased the daily routine for staff by providing grocery shopping through our

Carmen’s Cafe. The popular dining spot is currently closed but offering kitchen essentials at cost to our team members.”

He adds, “That’s another example of being good stewards of our existing resources while supporting staff that is working diligently to care so for our community during this difficult time.”
