The Official Release from The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office on AB 900 Jail Funding.
San Andreas, CA...On May 8, 2008 the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office attended the Corrections Standards Authority Board meeting in Sacramento. The purpose of the meeting was to determine which counties would receive AB 900 funds for local jail construction. The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office came in fourth place of the counties with a population under 200,000. There is a total of $100 million available to counties with a population under 200,000....
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office requested $26 million from those AB 900 funds. The Corrections Standards Authority Board recommended that the three counties that finished in front of Calaveras County would each receive $30 million and Calaveras County would receive the remaining $10 million.
The final funding award will take place at the Corrections Standards Authority board meeting in September of this year. This is to ensure that all counties have a viable site for their re-entry facilities for state prison inmates. If one of the three counties does not meet the re-entry review requirements, Calaveras County could receive full funding.
During this time the Calaveras County Sheriff's Office will continue planning construction of a new jail.
The funding process has been very challenging and several changes have occurred. The Sheriff's Office has adapted to those changes by working with other agencies to establish a regional re-entry facility in Stockton. This situation has made Calaveras County very competitive to receive the full funding request.
The Calaveras County Sheriff's Office believes we have the greatest need for a new jail facility and will continue to work to improve public safety for the citizens of Calaveras County.
For counties with a population under 200,000 Calaveras County placed fourth out of ten counties that applied for AB 900 funding.
