Calaveras Cases Linked to Cruise Ship Test Negative for Coronavirus

San Andreas, CA...On March 6, 2020, Calaveras Public Health received test results from cases linked to the Grand Princess Cruise ship that departed from San Francisco on February 11, traveled to Mexico, and returned on February 21. Those tests came back negative.

Additional potential cases were identified in persons who may have been exposed to novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) over the past few days. Those individuals are self-isolating in their homes and in close contact with Calaveras Public Health. Testing for the novel coronavirus has been obtained and the results are pending.
Calaveras Public Health staff are actively and extensively planning and responding to COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Calaveras County.

COVID-19 is spread from person-to-person. Droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly inhaled into the lungs. Symptoms may include fever, cough, and shortness of breath.

Calaveras Public Health continues to encourage community members to take the following steps commonly used to help avoid flu:
 Wash your hands often with soap and water.
 Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth with unwashed hands.
 Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
 Stay home from work or school and limit contact with others if you are sick with fever and cough.
 Clean surfaces that are touched often, like toys and doorknobs.

The State and Calaveras Public Health will continue to monitor for potential new cases of COVID-19 and provide updates to the public regularly. Information about COVID-19 can be found on the Calaveras Public Health website at calaveraspublichealth.com. People who think they may have been exposed to COVID-19 should contact Calaveras Public Health at (209) 754-6460, Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 5:00PM.
