Three Local Non-Profit Agencies Receive Books in Honor of Cesar Chavez Day from CHP San Andreas...Multi Department Effort Aimed at Providing Children with Educational Materials....Short Video Enclosed
San Andreas, CA...The seventh annual César E. Chávez Children’s Book Drive at the San Andreas CHP was a great success for Calaveras County, collecting over 160 books. The book drive ran from Monday, March 31, Chávez’s Birthday, to May 5, 2008. Children from across the state will receive books collected during the campaign, which is co-sponsored by the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) and the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.....
San Andreas Teen Center Board Member Paul Steck, CHP San Andreas Clerical Supervisor Jeanne Burkman, Sergeant Georgia Hiehle, #10578, Ms. Tammy Beilstein, Calaveras County Human Resources Council.
“Several families took the time to drop off books to our office during the book drive” Officer Jaime Castillo said. “As a result, we were able to provide over 160 books to a variety of organizations including The San Andreas Teen Center, and The Human Resources Council of Calaveras County, which has 5 major divisions including The Calaveras Crisis Center, The Calaveras Head Start Program, and Child Care Resources.” “It’s a great example of how our community supports local programs” said Castillo.
In 2003, the California Highway Patrol joined this effort, and in 2005 the Department of Financial Institutions began participating. Since its inception, more than 60,000 books have been donated.
