NEWS ALERT....Pipe Bomb Found in Vehicle in Downtown Angels Camp Sunday Evening(Updated)
Angels Camp, CA...At approximately 8:13pm this evening, a vehicle was pulled over by Angels Camp Police Department Officer Scarborough, for a vehicle infraction in front of the Angels Camp Fire Department at Hwy 4. There was an adult male and adult female in the vehicle. The female from Turlock, the male from Modesto. The male was arrested on an outstanding Felony Narcotics Warrant. During inspection of the vehicle after the stop, what appeared to be a pipe bomb was discovered in the vehicle. Immediately after the discovery, Hwy 4 at 49 was closed and the Calaveras Bomb Squad was called out to take care of the device. A 2nd charge of possession of an explosive was added for the man already in custody. The woman was released. The Hwy was immediately closed for approximately 1 hour and reopened at around 9:15pm.
We would like to thank Angels Camp Police Sargent Steven Poortinga for giving us the details of the incident.
An additional twist to this case, was that due of the proximity of the vehicle stop to the Fire Station, the Fire Fighters couldn't retrieve there equipment and the station was unavailable for calls until the Bomb Squad was finished with the device. The Altaville Station and mutual aid from Murphys or other departments would have had to respond to any calls that came in while the station was unavailable.
We will provide additional details as they become available...
