The Last Cattle Drive?~Video By John Hamilton
Angels Camp, CA...Early Saturday Morning a scene out of the old west was played out just East of Angels Camp. A Cattle Drive started on Murphys Grade Road and then proceeded down Rolleri Bypass and ended at the Old Tryon Ranch off of Hwy 4. The Tryon Cattle Drive has become a local tradition every spring. Men and Women on horseback, and a large meandering herd of mooing cattle made their way from one spring pasture to another. Next year if this drive is to continue is will have to find another path. In a few weeks the Rolleri Bypass will be disected by construction of the Angels Camp Bypass and...
one of the prices of progress may be the waning of a few of our local traditions.
The Cattle Drive even had a police escort as the CHP and Angels Camp Police Departments eased the herd's travel along the public roads. We followed from the Murphys Grade side as they made their way to the Ranch off Hwy 4.
The video runs 4-5 minutes and has some nice footage as they head down a hill on the ranch as well. It is possible that a new route for next year's Cattle Drive can be found but it is certain that the Last Cattle Drive along the old path has been taken.
