Mark Twain Health Care District Helps Fund Steps to Kick Cancer! TV’s Tina Macuha ill inspire guests at Oct. 24 luncheon

San Andreas, CA...Mark Twain Health Care District is a generous financial supporter of the Oct. 24 Steps to Kick Cancer awareness event at Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC). Additional community partners are Sierra Pacific Industries and the Calaveras Cancer Support Group Fund of the Calaveras Community Foundation.
The luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the meal catered by MTMC’s popular Carmen’s Cafe. Seating is limited and reservations are required; call 754-5919 now.

Steps to Kick Cancer is an awareness event, with guests enjoying a complimentary sit-down lunch; drawing inspiration from ten-year breast cancer survivor Tina Macuha; and learning about local resources to diagnose, treat and triumph over breast cancer.

Tina is one of the Sacramento region’s most popular television personalities, appearing on CW-31’s “Good Day Sacramento” morning show since its inception in 1995. In April 2009, she began sharing her breast cancer journey on the show.

MTHCD Chief Executive Officer Randy Smart notes, “Breast cancer is a fatal disease and tragedy that threatens every woman – and man. Most patients can easily survive if they just give us the chance to find it early. We urge everyone, please get mammograms and exams!”

Fighting breast cancer is an important focus for the district, which is dedicated to the health and well-being of the individuals and communities of Calaveras County. In June, Calaveras County voters approved Measure A, which authorized MTHCD to enter into a new lease with Mark Twain Medical Center and a restructured affiliation with Dignity Health for another 30 years.

The district has been a key donor to the Mark Twain Medical Center Foundation's fundraising for a comprehensive new Breast Health Program at MTMC. It’s $372,000 grant to the Foundation has helped secure the latest innovative technology. Hologic 3D Mammography and Breast Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) will soon be used to diagnose breast cancer in an average of 12 to 15 patients a day.

Debbie Sellick, a breast cancer survivor and a driving force behind the Calaveras Cancer Support Group, was elected to the MTHCD board of directors in 2016; her fellow board members are Lin Reed, Ann Radford, Susan Atkinson and Talibah Al-Rafiq. Debbie says, “When I first learned of plans for the Steps to Kick Cancer luncheon I approached groups that I work with to get involved, “It is exciting that both the district and support group stepped up to help underwrite expenses of the event,” she adds. “Their backing, along with support from Sierra Pacific Industries, is funding a tent pavilion and added hospitality for the large number of guests expected to attend.”

In keeping with Breast Cancer Awareness Month’s traditional pink theme – pink shoes will be a fun focus at the
luncheon. Guests are urged to wear pink shoes to qualify for special prizes. Community groups are supporting the
event with entries for a PINK SHOE ART SHOW that day. Local businesses wishing to donate a door prize can
contact Nicki Stevens at 209.754.5919.
