Soroptomist International Calaveras County Awards $11,350.00!

Murphys, CA....Soroptimist International of Calaveras County awarded $11,350.00 in scholarships and charitable gifts during their annual Awards Dinner held on April 17th at Kautz Ironstone Vineyards. Former County Supervisor, Lucy Thein, received the Making a Difference for Women award presented by SICC member, Karen Varni. Ms. Thein was recognized for her decades of service to Calaveras County, including her work for Turner Park in San Andreas and Habitat for Humanity. The Making a Difference for Women Award included a $250.00 cash to further Habitat for Humanity’s goals.....

SICC member and Ironstone Human Resources Director, Lynn Darmsted, presented the Violet Richardson Award to Amelia Jensen, a student at Mt. Oaks School in San Andreas. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes a young woman who has done outstanding volunteer work in her community. Ms. Jensen, who is hoping to pursue a teaching career in Special Education, was honored for her service working with educationally challenged and autistic young students in Calaveras County.

Rene A. Smith received the Women’s Opportunity Award presented by SICC member, Kathi Flores. The Women’s Opportunity Award is dedicated to helping head of household parents gain new skills in the workforce, in order to better their lives and that of their children. Ms. Smith plans to pursue a career in cosmetology with the goal of opening her own full-service salon. Her SICC award will provide funds for tuition, books and other expenses to help her reach career goals.

SICC Scholarship Awardees were Margie Rodriguez of Calaveras High School, Madeline Cronk and Cayenne Hunt from Bret Harte High School, along with Natasha Read-Johnson and Sara Eschen, who attend Mountain Oaks School in San Andreas. Each student was recognized for their academic and personal achievement with a substantial scholarship for their future academic studies in college or trade school. This year’s students expressed desires to pursue careers in fashion design, marine biology, education and computer science.

The SICC Awards Dinner is the highlight of the club’s fund raising efforts. Monies awarded are raised by SICC members through their annual Festival of Trees Gala and Teddy Bear Tea which is held every November as a charitable fund raiser for the community.

Soroptimist means best for women. Soroptimist is an international volunteer organization for business and professional women. The club’s goal is to work to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. The Club was chartered by Soroptimist International of Sonora on June 7, 1947 and has been actively raising funds to donate back to the community since that time.
